Analyst: Apple to unveil Intel-based iBooks, ‘real’ video iPod at special event in April

“Analysts for Needham & Co this week said they believe Apple will hold a special media event sometime in April to unveil Intel-based iBooks and a more functional video iPod,” Kasper Jade reports for AppleInsider. “‘At the end of his Macworld keynote address in January, Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO, noted that the company will celebrate its 30th birthday on April 1, 2006,’ analyst Charles Wolf wrote in a research note released to clients on Thursday. ‘While it’s possible that Jobs’ was simply pointing out the longevity of Apple, we interpret it as a signal that Apple will hold a major birthday party in the form of new product event around that date, most likely in early April.'”

Jade reports, “‘The one sure-fire product Apple has to introduce is an iBook running on the Intel single core Yonah processor,’ wrote Wolf. The analyst notes that the K-12 school-buying season begins in May; and the iBook represents an increasing fraction of Apple sales in this market. ‘Failure to have an Intel iBook ready for the school-buying season could significantly jeopardize Apple’s education sales,’ the analyst added. Wolf also believes that Apple will use the event introduce the ‘real’ video iPod. ‘Apple was careful to call the iPod capable of displaying video that it introduced in October just that—an iPod that played music but also featured a video viewing capability,’ he wrote. ‘According to our sources, the screen on the Video iPod will occupy the entire front of the current iPod with a touch-activated scroll wheel.’ Assuming the iPod retains the fifth-generation form factor, this move will increase the size of the screen three-fold, the analyst said.”

RUMOR: True Apple video iPod with 3.5-inch display, touch-screen click wheel coming soon – February 09, 2006

  1. “now, what am I supposed to do with my new video ipod!”

    Watch videos.
Last time I checked new products don’t make the older ones stop working when they are released.

Need proof? My G5 iMac still works.
I am sure your current iPod capable of playing video will pull through.

  2. “I just got a new iPod and my undies are in a bunch over this new rumor. What should I do!?”

Well #1 you could return it if you “Just” bought it. Or, #2 you could sell it and wait to see if Apple releases a new one on April 1st. Or, #3 you could shut the hell up and continue to enjoy your iPod which is just as good, and will continue to be just as good, as when you bought it. If I had a nickle…

  3. I bought an iPod w/ color display in September, because it came with a $179 rebate. (The rebate came from the purchase of a Powerbook.) I knew full well that Apple was going to release something cool right after that. I use it every day and I guarantee that sounds a lot like a 5G iPod. I would prefer a PDA/Phone/iPod that was not small at the expense of battery life. For example, if the 5G iPod was as thick as the 4G, it could have had a 40 hour battery life.

  4. The low-power CoreDuo chip is NOT CHEAPER, so it won’t be in the iBook. And, they won’t use a CoreSolo, as that’s only $40 cheaper at OEM prices, so where’s the savings. What I hope will happen is that the iBook gets a CoreDuo, and that the MacBooks get Merom chips.

  5. Come on people, quit your bitchin. We all know Apple releases something new every couple of months. If you want the ‘latest and greatest’, just wait a couple of months. But remember you can’t wait forever or you’ll never own anything. Also remember 5 years from now (which ain’t that far away when you think about it) the iPod will probably have 2 or 3 terrabytes of storage, a built in bluetooth phone, radio and voice recorder. One of those cool roll out screens or maybe even a tiny data projector so you can watch movies on your loungeroom wall. The lens of this projector will of course be the same lens that the camera uses, which it also will have. Could also have GPS and stud finder capabilities. Bottom line is technology is exploding at the moment. I’m just sitting back and enjoying the ride. I can’t wait for all the techno gizmos that will be around in 10 years.
