IDC 2005 top 10 global notebook computer vendors; Apple #9 with 2.171 million units shipped

“The global notebook market totaled 65.3 million units in 2005, up 33.5% from the 48.9 million units shipped in 2004, according to data compiled by IDC. The notebook segment accounted for about 31% of the 207 million PCs shipped worldwide last year, up four-percentage points on year, IDC found,” David Tzeng and Jessie Shen report for DigiTimes. “Although Dell, Hewlett Packard (HP) and Toshiba held the top three spots, respectively, for the year, Taiwan-based Acer bumped Toshiba from the third position in the fourth quarter. Lower down the Top 10 list, Asustek Computer overtook Apple Computer for the ninth position in the fourth quarter, although Apple was able to come out ahead for the year.”

  1. “For 2006 this report will have the MacBook Pro and MacBook (aka iBook) combo registering Apple as number 3.”

Guessing: While I agree the new Intel based Apple notebooks will help push them up in the rankings, I think #3 for 2006 is a bit optimistic. First of all, Apple doesn’t have the entire year to sell the new models, since even the first MacBook Pro’s will only ship in late February and other models only after they have been released which won’t be until March at the earliest (best guess). I’d be happy to see Apple take the #7 spot. #6 would be an amazing accomplishment. #3? Well, that’s just dreaming, but hey, one can only hope…

“I thought Apple’s notebook share was more than that (like 8%)?”

DudeMac: Probably in the US, this is worldwide.

  2. To show how ungood it is, say 100 people bought notebook computers today – only 3 bought an Apple computer.

And with Apple notebooks now having the same insides as the rest of them, it does not make Apple an easier sell.

  3. Here’s something to ponder. Sales of laptops vs desktops were neck and neck until last quarter, when laptops overtook desktops for the first time.

Now consider that worldwide Mac share was reported as low as 1.9% just a couple of years ago. Assuming that desktop share has increased to the same degree that laptop has, then overall Mac share is up 70+% in just the last two or three years.

With Intel inside, can Apple capitalize on 40% year over year computer growth, and double Mac share by the end of 2007?

  4. After posting the above I did the math and come up with 2.25% worldwide share (laptops and desktops combined).

Apple still has a long way to go, but the good news is that laptops are gaining as a percent of overall computer sales.

65,300,000 laptops equals 31% of 210,645,000 computers. During calendar 2005 Apple shipped 4,742,000 computers.

    >”For 2006 this report will have the MacBook Pro and MacBook (aka iBook) combo registering Apple as number 3.<

Well, I understand that your hopes are high (as all Mac users are – myself included), but 3.32% is PRETTY MUCH in line with Apples current OVERALL market share. I would love to see them knock NEC down and I would ABSOLUTELY love to see them knock Sony down a notch. But being number 3 with approximately 10% market share is going to take some time….

For the person who posted about Compaq being lumped in with HP. HP now owns Compaq.

    >With Intel inside, can Apple capitalize on 40% year over year computer growth, and double Mac share by the end of 2007?<

I would hope they could, but I am consciously optimistic. 40% growth for both 2006 and 2007 would be astounding to say the least.
