  1. They are so funny because it is true. Also, the demo Bill does of the future where he is collaborating with colleagues totally reminds me of the Knowledge Navigator video from a long, long time ago. Check out the part with the chart. Doesn’t that remind you of the graph from KN?

  2. The sad thing is that Apple hasn´t promoted its OS enough so that the average computer user (the 90+% non apple users) thinks all this Windows Vista stuff is new and original from Microsoft.
    When it finally comes out they will all say cool…and then say why do we need to switch to Apple if Vista gives us the same experience?

    Steve has failed miserably in promoting his OS and computers.

  5. Steve has failed miserably in promoting his OS and computers.

    Hardly. Industry CPU growth is about 13% per annum. Mac CPU growth is running 3X that rate.

    Uncontrolled growth has the potential to be more damaging than no growth at all.

    Adv ertising isn’t all its cracked up to be. There are other ways to get your product noticed that cost less, and are more effective. Apple knows what it’s doing.

  6. that’s really funny. what’s not funny is that there are people out there that think the whole vista concept is brand new when apple has had the same functions for almost a year and will have them for more than a year once vista gets released. i’ll have some boneheads that i work with saying they can do “this” or “that” with Vista. I’ll just give them the blank stare and tell them I’ve been doing that for years with Apple Mac OS X TIger. The truth is, many people don’t even know that Apple has a Mac OS outside of the ipod.

    Apples growth in the past YEAR was up over the rest of the industry. Last year.
    Most of it is from old Apple owners upgrading their systems. You think Apple is going to continue that type of growth every year? Dream on.
    Once Vista comes out watch the zillions of PC owners start upgrading. (Heck, there are more Windows 98 owners using the internet than all Mac OS users combined.) And when Vista comes out Bill Gates will promote the heck out of it and they will sell zillions of copies of their OS. (You ever remember any OSX ads that got your PC owning friend´s attention?)

    What you must mean is: “BAD, ineffective or non-existant advertising isn’t all its cracked up to be.” Which is what Apple does for its OS and computers.
    Steve stuck all his ad budget into building up the network of Apple stores. It helped sales for sure, but still Apple has a teeny, tiny share of the computer market.
    And why do you think Apple stopped breaking out sales for each line of computers in its quarterly financial reports – basically to cover up how poor the mac mini (the computer that was going to convert the masses of PC users to MacOS) is a dud.
    Can anybody remember one ad or promotion for the macmini aimed at PC owners?
    And hoping for a product to become a cult, in-fashion hit (like the iPod) is totally unpredictible and uncontrollable. If it wasn´t for all the Windows owners buying the iPod (which works with a Windows computer and they don´t need an Apple computer), the iPod would have been a low seller. Apple couldn´t rely on its Mac computer owning base to bring in the sales it has enjoyed.

  9. When Vista ships folks in the MSM will gush how innovative the new OS from Microsoft is and how it will set a new standard in user experience. Just you wait and see.
    I hope that some in the MSM will speak up for Apple.
    IF Apple were to ship an OS—that is IF—game over for Microsoft.

  10. Bob H,you make some good points. But I disagree with your statement that “zillions of PC owners” will be switching to Vista. There are still plenty of PC owners who use Windows 98 and the horrible Millenium Edition ( I think blue must be these people’s favorite color). Not everybody can dish out hundreds of dollars everytime Microsoft releases a new operating system or Office Suite. And we all know Vista is going to need some serious hardware to take advantage of all it’s features.

    And iPods had already gained a sizable share of the MP3 player market BEFORE iTunes became available to Windows XP users.

    The back of my XP Upgrade box has this statement:
    “Store and share your pictures, make music mixes, or create videos – dependably and securely.”

    It’s not the Mac Cultists sippin’ the kool-aid, it’s the “zillion of PC owners” that believe that statement who are doing the sipping.

    I love folks like you. I’ve made 1000% on AAPL in the last 3 years. Growth in CPU sales is 30+%. Think it’s not sustainable? If sales double every year for 3 years that’s still only a 24% market share. Do you remember seeing any Corvette ads lately? That’s because they already sell all the Corvettes they make, without advertising. As far as the Apple stores, it’s far more effective than TV ads that would get people into a Fry’s or Best Buy where the high school drop out sales staff will steer them away from Macs and to the Dell aisle because the margins are better and because they are totally ignorant of anything but Windoze first-person shooters. I was in CompUSA last week looking for a Mac keyboard. The helpful and professional sales clerk didn’t know that a Mac keyboard has USB ports and didn’t even seem to know what a USB port looked like.

    The Mac Mini is in the same position as the iPod before the iTunes store opened. I suspect we will see a whole new niche for the Mac mini by the end of next week. But you keep right on dissing Apple, Bob. Meantime, I’ll be paying for an Ivy League university education out of my AAPL holdings.

    Ha! You just negated your own argument, zilions won’t upgrade BECAUSE they are still using Windows 98 and are stuck there!

  13. Those millions of Win98 users are probably in about the same position I was. I refused to buy another OS from MS. When Win98 died I bought a PowerMac G5 and never looked back. Do you think Win98 users are going to be happy about spending $1500 on a new machine to run the same old crap with a couple more bells and whistles that make it even more buggy and complex? Or do you think the just might spend $500 on a Mac Mini with OS X? Or even $1500 on a killer iMac with extra memory, a superdrive, ilife, an iSight, and extra HD space?
