HD DVD launch delayed

“Japanese electronics maker Toshiba Corp. said Tuesday copy protection issues would delay the Japan launch of the first players supporting its HD DVD format, the latest development in the high-stakes battle for the next generation of video discs,” The Associated Press reports. “Players will not hit the Japanese market until details of a copy protection system for the players are worked out, Toshiba said in a statement, reversing its earlier intention to roll out the first players in Japan by the end of the year. Toshiba did not give a specific release date. But the company said it would continue to push for a U.S. launch early next year.”

“HD DVD is backed by Universal Studios, Warner Bros. and Intel Corp., as well as Microsoft Corp., which hopes its new Xbox 360 video game console will challenge the longtime dominance of Sony’s PlayStation,” AP reports. “Blu-ray is backed by Apple Computer Inc., Hewlett-Packard Co. and Dell Inc., along with a variety of other tech companies and studios.”

“90 percent of the CE industry and seven movie studios now back Blu-ray Disc. And most of the IT industry (except Microsoft) also supports Blu-ray Disc,” Dennis Barker reports for Desingtechnica.

  2. Jobs:

Please don’t use babble fish to translate a dialog…it sounds stupid…

I’m not making fun of non English speakers, but if you don’t speak the language…well.

That’s why I don’t make jokes in Latin. His undoubtedly clever jest loses all it’s glory.

  3. Would people in other countries please answer this question. In Australia we have digital pay (cable) television being rolled out. On the movie channels new Universal movies are copyrighted preventing subscribers from making personal copies. I was on the verge of transferring from the analogue service until I was confronted with this issue. Is this the case in other countries or is this just Australia specific? Please note this is not part of a box office package just on the normal movie channels.

  4. To anyone who knows the original dialogue . . .

    . . . that. . . is. . . f-cking. . . Hilarious!!!!!!

    Good job . . . Jobs.

  5. I got to agree, I loved it Jobs. I run a plasma screen at a college using Keynote, school events type of stuff. One month when they were particularly slow in getting me new information to post I put up ‘All your base are belong to us.’ It’s one of those things that if you get it you get it, if you don’t then move along, nothing to see here.

  6. blue-ray is very much alive here in electronics land. blue-ray dvr’s are selling, albeit a little pricy for now. with this delay, i don’t think hd-dvd has a chance now.

mw: attack, as in blue-ray is in attack mode?
