MacDailyNews and iPodDailyNews will be upgrading our ability to serve our growing traffic demands this weekend. As you probably know, the site has been sluggish lately as visits to our sites continue to grow. During recent Apple events, the sites have been virtually inaccessible at times, so the upgrade is in order. In October 2005, we served 2.185 million sessions and transferred 377.22 GB of data to 136 countries. Our host, pMachine Hosting has explained that an IP address change will be necessary as we move to a new dedicated server. As some of you may know, our sites are driven by pMachines’ ExpressionEngine and we highly recommend pMachine Hosting for dependable, secure, high-performance web hosting with excellent customer service.
We expect the vast majority of visitors will see the new server within hours as the DNS information propagates. For a small minority, it could take up to a day or so for the new IP information to propagate. It will depend on your ISP. During the changeover, visitors whose ISP’s haven’t yet incorporated the new DNS information and are still hitting the old server will see a note stating that fact. If you see the actual MacDailyNews or iPodDailyNews web site as usual, you’re all set; you’ll already be visiting the new server.

[UPDATE: 1:09pm ET: As those who’ve followed our travels from server to server know, MacDailyNews’ and iPodDailyNews’ current host, pMachine Hosting, uses servers that run Linux. We have also used Mac OS 9, Mac OS X and FreeBSD in the past. We probably will hit one or all of them again in the future – well, maybe not Mac OS 9. 
Notice that we have never used a Windows-based server, nor will we ever. ‘Nix variants, when offered by a robust host with reasonable rates, are all in play, with Mac OS X, of course, being our primary choice when it’s available. This site was designed on Mac OS, the articles are written on machines running Mac OS X and we endorse Mac OS X completely for servers and many other uses. The server OS is a function of the web host and the web sites’ budgets, service needs, etc. I used to run a small Mac site – much smaller than MDN/iPodDN. Sure we wanted to run on Mac OS X, but if your preferred host uses Linux or FreeBSD, that’s what you use. We wouldn’t choose a host that ran Windows servers. For many reasons, but mainly because we wanted the site to be online.
Congratulations to MDN for adding more power. Mac360, and many other Mac sites use pMachine’s Expression Engine for content management. We recently moved Mac360 to pMachineHosting.com and they’re highly recommended. BTW – the pMachine development team uses Macs.

They did not MOVE to a new host, they have been with pMachineHosting for over a year, they are just moving to a dedicated server now… Do any of you people bitching about speed actually run a super busy web site or servers? I thought not…
