“Television is finally leaving the living room,” Julian Lee reports for The Sydney Morning Herald. “The day before Apple is expected to announce an Australian music and video download service, Foxtel has announced a portable device to watch pay TV on the go.”
“The details are sketchy, but Foxtel today promised to launch a portable digital TV device within 18 months. The device would be available only to Foxtel digital TV subscribers who own the iQ ‘personal video recorder,’” Lee reports.
“Apple is holding a press conference in Sydney tomorrow, at which it is expected to unveil a long-awaited Australian version of its iTunes [Music Store], which will sell music and possibly video. The United States version of iTunes already sells popular TV shows for $US2 each,” Lee reports.

ownership of shares in the latter) have too much power and too much
emphasis on mediocre products. (Telstra still thinks ADSL is a form of
broadband despite the fact I was using Ethernet at faster speeds decades ago … really sad!!!)

Actually, it’s the rest of the world which is viewed in an upside down manner. Aussies (and Antarctica) are actually on the top of the world. How do I know this? Coz I’m smart that’s why (haha.) Look at a globe upside down… the heavy stuff falls to the bottom (North America, Russia/Asia, Europe etc), plus, as a bonus, the earth spins clockwise in this scenario as well. Woo hoo!

In case it is true, I want to see television shows available in Australia the day after their network debut in America. I also want to see a lot of Australian shows made available on the iTMS. Pizza and Kath & Kim are better than 99% of the American shows that have taken over our televisions. In case anybody forgot, Australia has its own culture.

I was wondering when MDN would pick up on this story (which originally appeared in The Sydney Morning Herald’s Business section. The original story, which appeared on Thursday or Friday last week said that the copyright details and remittances had been agreed to and the launch would go ahead tomorrow (October 25).
Interestingly one free to air station said they were looking at several online business models to post television shows and you guessed it ITMS was one of them.
My contacts in the OZ entertainment industry have not denied the story. Then again, I was also told that it would happen on October 3 and then ten days after that. But getting three launch dates in one month; well that’s another thing all together. I think it’s a goer.
One final point, if we’re geographically upside down (which from space is impossible) why is it that many places are behind Australia. Are y’all slow? What’s good for the goose is good for the gander!!!

FYI – If you live in the Northern Hemisphere – you are the upside downers. The top of the planet (that which points to the sun and that is how a planet’s “top” is determined astronomically) is the South Pole.
In regards to iTunes Music Store – I believe that it will not be launched until the 31st but introduced TODAY because SONY is still holding out for multi-pricing based upon popularity and may be asking for part of the iPod revenues. BUT if Apple does as it did in Japan, then it will be open tomorrow/today and the artists will need to demand representation or change producers. SONY controls about 25% of the music production market – so it is a big deal to see Apple defy them. It will make renegotiation of other SONY/Apple contracts interesting.
As for my credit card – it is ready for an iTMSAU – has been for a while – even though I have access and purchasing ability from my US addie.

Regarding ITMS I read that the royalty issue had been wrapped up. What the hell. Australians have waited this long they can wait a bit longer. However what is different this time is that my sources aren’t talking. And that’s definitely a first.
