RadioShack CEO: We’re selling all the Apple iPods we can get

“Electronics retailer RadioShack Corp. reported Friday its third-quarter profit rose 56 percent on a large one-time gain and increased sales,” Steve Quinn reports for The Associated Press. “Chief Operating Officer David Edmondson said the company will emphasize sales of satellite radio, digital imaging, MP3 and wireless products. ‘These are hot categories and very productive for RadioShack,’ Edmondson told analysts in a conference call. ‘They drive traffic into the stores, and they also provide opportunities for selling profitable accessories.'”

Quinn reports, “Edmondson said customers now connect RadioShack with the hand-held electronic devices. ‘We are selling all that we can get’ of the iPods and their accessories, he said. ‘They are coming in the back door and going out the front door.’

Quinn reports, “William Baldwin, Dallas-based analyst for Baldwin Anthony Securities, said the move to carry the devices was late. ‘It’s a plus, and it will bring traffic into the stores, but why wasn’t it there two years ago?’ he said. ‘They don’t have too many female shoppers, and iPods appeal to everybody. If they get more female shoppers who see other things they like, it will help overall sales.'”

  1. John, a “radio shack” is a building (or room or corner) where a radio hobbyist keeps their radio gear. Hence the name and original focus of the store chain. It used to be a great place for amateur radio and scanner hobbyists with a nice selection of electronic parts for the do-it-yourself-ers.

Personally, this female shopper preferred the old Radio Shack, when they used to be a treasure trove of cool stuff (I do own a couple of scanners and a short-wave radio in my little radio shack, and I loved to play with my electronics lab when I was a kid). Now they are just another place to get small consumer electronics (with nary a circuit board in sight). If they are trying to please me, they obviously aren’t doing a good job.

Forget the pink Nano too. I like the white ones they have now.

  2. Moth Maiden, Thanks for educating me on that. Actually, I bought a scanner there about 10 years ago.
I think the thing with me is that I have had nothing but bad experiences at Radio Shack. I have been in there with different people when they had bad experiences. I used to hate going in there to buy something quick and have to go through the “what’s your phone number” routine. I hated trying to keep my info private from them when I was paying cash for something that cost only a few dollars.
I have found a few things at RS over the years that I needed. But, I don’t see how they stay in business. The things they carry are such small-ticket items. I bought an adapter for a microphone or something once, and the scanner, but no one is ever in their store at the mall. I wonder how they pay the light bill, rent, and employees. When I think of buying my next iPod, the last place on this planet is RS. Shoot, I’d go to Target to get one before I’d hit RS. But, with Christmas coming, I imagine the nano will be something that people try to find anywhere they can.
I want to see the white and black nano’s in-person. I think I want a white one, too. Cheers!
