RUMOR: video iPod coming at special Apple event, Mac updates to come later next week

“Tomorrow may in fact see the release of a video iPod, while Mac updates may not be delivered until next week,” Think Secret reports. “Sources are pointing to 30GB and 60GB iPods debuting tomorrow, likely with some sort of video playback ability. Think Secret sources still expect pricing to remain at $299 and $399, with each model offered in two colors.”

Think Secret reports, “Should video playback be incorporated into tomorrows iPod, it may not be with an emphasis on commercial movies. Rumors have swirled for months concerning Apple’s sale of music videos at the iTunes Music Store, and those plus video podcasts and television broadcasting appear better positioned at this point for a video iPod than feature length films. Apple will be hosting a media event at the BBC’s headquarters in London tomorrow to coincide with the media event in California, suggesting a tie-in with that broadcasting entity.”

  1. For anybody who doesn’t know who John Peel was, he was a British DJ who achieved the unique distinction of being the most influential supporter of new music throughout more than 40 years.

He was responsible for discovering and encouraging countless successful bands and his independence, judgement and humour made him an inspirational figure for two or three generations.

In later years he also found success on talk radio, where he found popularity with a much older audience. He won acclaim for being the best talk radio artist and simultaneously for being the best DJ. The fact that he had simultaneous appeal to grandparents and their grandchildren is a testimony to the unique talents of the man.

Apart from all that success, he was a rather modest man, always self-deprecating and genuinely loved by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Sadly he suddenly died last year, long before his time. But his work in championing new music has led to Glastonbury Festival having a John Peel Stage and the BBC’s pop music channel, Radio 1, having a John Peel day.

He was a very early champion of punk bands and after he died, instead of the traditional one minute silence as a mark of respect, it was suggested that he would have preferred a one minute noise.

  2. There’s not going to be a video iPod introduced. This “Think Secret” website is obviously wrong. Who is this guy anyways, probably just some 14 kid with a web page. It sounds like something a 14 year old would say. “Hey, there’s going to be video iPods, that connect together and form the Super Ultra Mega-iPod-zord!” That’s just dumb. Don’t listen to stupid kids.

Apple will be introducing G5 Power Macs, with twice as many holes in the front, as well as in the back.

  3. isn’t this the year of HiDef? where are all the consumer products that incorporate HD seemlessly into our lives? i’m still waiting for a set top box to incorporate all my music and movies, kinda like Sonos but for built for Mac.

you can download HD content from apple’s quicktime site, the movies are awesome! thank god for fios. =)

  4. AlanAudio:

well said sir. i certainly did not like every piece of music he played, but he really did make me open my ears and appreciate other tastes that i would probably not have come across.

the word irreplaceable is often overused but i feel he, of all people, is.

MW : expected, as in we never expected him to go so soon.

  5. A “major” press event for a video iPod is a waste of time because a video iPod is generally stupid and useless UNLESS the video iPod can be connected to a TV and display a movie (downloaded from iTunes) on it.

In short, a video iPod is no big deal. Most people are not going to spend time watching a video on a tiny screen. I also believe that a video iPod already exists from another company.

Maybe Apple is coming out with some type of media hub that can connect to iTunes via your TV, where you can then browse movies from iTunes on your tv, and then play whatever movie you selected. This to me would be a good reason for Apple having a press event.
