“Microsoft Corp. is gearing up to release a subscription service that will make it easier for network technicians at big businesses to make sure computers don’t fall prey to spyware or virus attacks,” Elizabeth M. Gillespie reports for The Associated Press. “The world’s largest software maker said Thursday it will release a test version of the service by the end of the year.”
Gillespie reports, “Scott Stanzel, senior product manager in Microsoft’s security technology unit, said Client Protection, as the company is calling it, will be similar to Windows OneCare, an all-in-one service the company is working on to bolster security for personal computers.
The Redmond, Wash., company has not said how much the service will cost or when it will be available in final form.”

MacDailyNews Take: As stated before, there’s a tried and true name for people that will pay Microsoft for Windows and, on top of that, pay them extra for some promise of protection: “suckers.” Hate to break it to you this way, but if you’re that stupid, you deserve to use Windows, and only Windows, for the rest of your life.
We wonder what will happen if and when Microsoft’s security subscription earnings dip and need to be, ahem, “reinvigorated?”

Here is a question i have for mac heads and the MDN webmaster who wrote that response above..
If windows users are foced to pay up extra to protect their operating system then they are stupid… fine, lets follow your logic here… so that means that the customers who buy ipods must be stupid too (to quote MDN “Suckers” aswell).. since they have to fork out more money to protect it with ipod cases.. afterall as the apple store employee put it “Thats how they get you” …
as for the subscription service part.. well how many cases have u replaced for your ipod??? forget cases lets talk about batteries… screens… I can go on for days

Ive had iPods since the very begninnging. Count four iPods in my posession and the answer to your uqestion:
None and zero.
I think this is a good thing. We love macs but as we all know Windows is here to stay and some of us have to use it. Whether it is because we are required by work, we need an app that isn’t available for the mac, we have a partner/client that only uses Windows, or we have to use a website/intranet that only runs on MS Internet Explorer for Windows.
We should be a bit more mature about this. Maybe if Apple can double its market share then software developers will be able to more easily generate ROI to justify development efforts for the mac platform.

How can you foolishly compare the two situations? They are not even close to the same situation.
Not a single case replacement (in fact I don’t even have one), battery replacement, or screen replacement for the many iPods I have owned. I agree that there are those who have and I sympathize with them and Apple does an admirable job (not perfect though) of addressing the problem with a reasonable replacement plan. Apple has replaced one of my mini’s (after it’s warranty had expired by 4 months) due to a static problem.
On the other hand, EVERY single copy of Windows EVER sold has security problems and vulnerabilities built into it’s design. Now they want the consumer to pay to protect against these deficiencies in there own product?

i have 3 ipods
one is 3 year old G2 20gb still works had loads of use. sure the battery is now done to say 3-4 hours but thats to be expected, what rechargeable lasts for ever?

re cases well i find buying one is sufficent, and comparing that protection to buying software then being told you need to pay for extra security is hardly analogous, its like saying i bought a car but had to pay extra for the door lock and ignition key!

Windows problem is that its not open source. mac had the same problem with OS 9 and before.. but they changed their core business.. which is good and they have set a long term goal to be strong but they still have holes. I give apple a point here.

I will commend apple where they deserve it and thats applecare. They do take care of you if you ask the right questions.. otherwise those drones in the black shirt and pants at the apple store are just rude snobs who snap at you if you show the slightest sense of being a tech smartass. Heres another layer to my debate.. why do you think apple makes its ipod so cosmetically fragile?? to maybe increase the preceptive value of the product.. like fine china?? Lets see.. easy to scratch, expensive so i must baby it… lets buy a case and more accessories to keep the “apple” of our eyes nice and shiny…
