Report: New iPods sans video, Power Macs, and PowerBooks to debut at Apple’s October 12th event

“Since coming forward with information concerning Apple’s anticipated announcements next week, sources have clarified that while the October 12 event will not deliver a video iPod, a lesser update to the full-size iPod will arrive alongside the new Pro Macs,” Ryan Katz reports for Think Secret. “The new iPod will be available in capacities up to 80GB and will be slightly smaller than current color iPods… While a video-capable iPod remains in development, without the agreements nor infrastructure in place to deliver movies to customers through a store-like interface, Apple sees little value in releasing such an iPod at this time.”

Katz reports on updated PowerBooks and Power Macs that are also expected next week.

  1. All this speculation is fun.

iPod, vPod. multi-media helmet, iPod sub-woofer suppository… whatever.

So, we’re rarely correct and it’s too bad that Apple plugged 99% of their new product info leakage. So what. It’s still fun to sift through the trickle of info and wonder what and when.

The vidiPod doesn’t make sense right now. When Apple has all their video-centric partnerships nailed down, yes.

Release new PowerBooks and I will be satisfied.

  2. Here’s the real deal,
You might want to lay off on the profanity a little bit unless what you want to do is offend pretty much everybody. Particularly the Jesus______Christ bit is way over the top and outside all bounds of decency whether you are a believer or not.

Make your point, keep it civil and clean, and move on. – or stay away.

  3. Yep. I agree. An HD iPod – iPod movie HD.

Oh, and like he is going to call a press conference to announce a new release to the powerpc platform. Uh. Not. Please people. It’s an iPod announcement. The Mac announcements will be reserved for next year when he intros the new MacTels.

  4. The bottom line is Apple will introduce something to do with extending their lead in the entertainment space. Whether its a new kind of Mac, Movie Store or iPod device, it will center around entertainment. That much is painfully clear with the red curtains in their invite.

  5. Ooh, look at “Here’s the Real Deal”!

He’s all “Look at me, I’m so SMART”!

He’s all “Look at me, I’m ANGRY!

He’s all “Look at me, I’m in SHAPE”!

He’s all “Look at me, I can use grown up NASTY WORDS!”

He’s all THAT, ain’t he? (And a PeeCee user if I ever read one.)

  6. Think Secret has a much better track record than most other rumor sites.

Not lately. The Apple lawsuit really castrated them. Who could believe this latest story? An 80GB iPod with no video (yawn) and slight improvements to Power Books and Power Macs but still with PPC chips (yawn). That’s not worth all the hoopla.

  7. I could care less about iPods (except how they affect my stock)…

    What I NEED is a dual/dual core G5 tower!

And as far as the red cutains… Steve was a fan of “Twin Peaks”.

  8. A Widget He Has Not

One thing that has got lost in the vPod rumour rash is download speed. It’s kind of important. A 14 song download from the iTunes music store takes 4 hours on dial up. With broadband, fast broadband like mine, (20 Mbs), video would still take an age to download even with a decent codec. In the UK our broadband is capped unless you’re lucky. Most people’s maximum monthly download allowance is 30GB in the UK. If you download two movies that’s your limit reached. No, I don’t believe a vPod is a workable proposition until HD densities get better, much better, and uncapped ADSL2+ goes mainstream. If it ever does. Guess again Guru?

I don’t know how fast your domestic lines are in the US or elsewhere but certainly this is an issue in the UK and Europe.

Basically. Who knows? Not us thats

  9. <<where are the new powerbooks? I need one 🙁 Please Apple, get back to computer related innovation.>>

If you happened to watch WWDC 2005 way back in June, you’d already know that the Intel CPUs are coming in 2006. That’s when you’ll see the “computer related innovation” you’re requesting…but seeing as how it’s not 2006 yet, you’re going to have to wait a while longer…

  10. Here’s the ONLY prediction that makes sense with all the facts and recent happenings:
It’ll be a new, smaller, full-size iPod line. That’s the ‘one more thing’. And because that gives them a forum and opportunity to get lots of free advertising (in association with the iPod announcement), they will also announce PM and PB upgrades, useful because it tells halo effect buyers before Christmas that there are fresh new computers to go with their new iPod goodness (maybe even offer the ‘buy a comp – get an iPod free’ deal). They will be G5 and G4 machinces, respectively, with modest upgrades. There might not be any discussion of the Intel switch (except maybe to say that it is still on track to be ‘announced’ at MW Jan, ’06).

If there’s video at all, it will simply be that the new iPod can show music videos such as the ones downloaded with iTunes tracks. Nothing to get excited about, really, and other than the ‘neat-o’ factor, pretty much useless. After all, it wouldn’t take much of a hardware or software tweak to make it possible.

  11. “An 80GB iPod with no video (yawn) and slight improvements to Power Books and Power Macs but still with PPC chips (yawn). That’s not worth all the hoopla.”

You’re right, there is no way Apple would announce a media event for something so mundane. And the event is called “ONE More Thing” after all, so that alone pretty much refutes what TS is claiming will be announced. They’re just guessing (badly).

  12. For Steve to bring the press back after only a month suggests the introduction of something completely new that will not compete directly with Apple’s other products. Having the event only one day after their Q4 financial report means they could also be refreshing CPUs if the sales numbers aren’t great. Whatever the new “box” is, it better be AWESOME or people will get a little tired of these “special anouncements”. Is Steve ready to take another bold step?

  13. No bold step, nothing completely new. iPod upgrade and PB, PM upgrades. These would have been announced before except:
    1. They weren’t going to be ready in time for Paris
    2. Somebody realized that there was greater advertising value in coupling their announcement with a new iPod announcement.
The nano was announced alone so as to not completely overshadow the ROKR (which it did anyways – much moreso than expected, with all the people clamoring for an iPod phone).
And don’t underestimate the power of special announcements – even little ones – if there’s an iPod involved (especially before the holidays, when everyone who still wants one and every kid who is just growing old enough to get one is ready to drop cold hard cash on it). Finally someone at Apple is starting to learn effective marketing (which is why the PM and PB announcements were saved until now).

  14. If 10.4.3 is about ready to ship then there is a chance that Apple will announce dual core PMs and PBs. Now is the time to do it as things are slowing down a bit in the sales area. After that we would get the one more thing iPod, which I would guess is a smaller version of the current iPod.

    The questions to ask are:

    How is 10.4.3 going?

Is Freescale ready to ship a dual core G4?

Is a dual core G4 faster than a low power G5 in the PB? Is IBM ready to ship a dual core G5?

  15. I’ll lay odds it’s video something. I’m doubtful about a video iPod though. But, outside of Apple, who knows? I’m thinking it’s going to be another consumer electronics device.

Already speculated in another thread about an Apple HD video projector with a dock for a video iPod to store and transfer movies.

Perhaps it’s an Apple branded HD TV with an integrated Mac-based PVR?

MDN word: “right” Hmmm. Could this be a sign from a higher power?

  16. Bruno: Exactly right. Whatever it is, it better be huge. Unless they didn’t mean for this much hype to arise out of this, then they (stockholders, really) are in for a hit… But how couldn’t they expect this reaction? They’re using the “famed” phrase, fer cryin’ out loud!

One thing’s for sure, Phil Schiller is getting a raise.

Here’s the real deal: Lighten up, Francis. you made your point early, and it was really very funny, but you should have stopped at “Pixar buys out LucusFilm”. Turn the filter up a little higher.
