“Apple Computer has begun production of a new version of its iPod digital music player that will be capable of playing videos… Reliable sources believe the iPod could be introduced as early as next week, possibly around the time Apple releases results from its fourth fiscal quarter of 2005,” Kasper Jade reports for Apple Insider. “…sources who claim to have seen the new iPod describe it as being similar to Apple’s 60GB iPod photo player, but several millimeters thinner [and features] a smaller click-wheel akin to that of the iPod nano’s, making way for a larger, higher-resolution color display that extends further down the face of the device.”
Jade reports, “The release of the iPod video is expected to be accompanied by a ‘major update’ to Apple’s iTunes music store that will include a significant number of music videos and other short video content.”

Here we go…
Who’s going to buy a 2 inch video screen. Not me sonny!!!!
Yeah baby.
Probably will cost too much for me. But maybe the price of the regular pods will go down.
MW – “years” as in it will be years before I can afford to buy one.
And compete so much with the new nano? Maybe it will be, buut my hope is for a set top box…
Baby steps for Apple…
This is just a baby step towards a video store!
MDN word: latter
The current iPod screen is already 2 inches, so if the new one has a smaller click wheel and larger screen, then it won’t be a 2 inch video screen then will it? My question is, are there enough people out there willing to pay $399+ for video capability on an iPod? I’m not so sure myself.
where are the new powerbooks? Is Apple all about iPod these days?
I’m in trouble if they introduce music videos for sale. Hide the credit cards…
The screen is still msaller than say,a PSP screen. That seems too small to me, but I just got a 20GB color iPod three weeks ago. This new iPod will probably cost $599US, like the Photo did when it debuted.
My gut feeling is that this will make it very useful to videographers who want to pipe raw video into it as storage and then upload it to FCP to edit. i just hope it has a larger hardrive than what is current – DV eats up a lot of space.
And if it does HD, well, I’ll just have to kiss yo mama!

If it has a 16:9 screen, I’m buying one. If it doesn’t, I’m not.
Another sleepless night Oct 11! I am buying one for sure. This will be great for watching vidcasts!!!! Party on!!!
“where are the new powerbooks? Is Apple all about iPod these days?”
Yeah, so much for any new Macs next week. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”raspberry” style=”border:0;” />
But then again, never dismiss a possible “one more thing” announcement.
How about a little teeny tiny DLP projector that uses one of these superbright white LEDs. Project a 30-50 inch wide image. Make it not much bigger than the iPod.
Thank you.
The selling point would not be that you could watch videos on a two-inch screen (though you could if you wanted to) but rather you could transfer huge video files around and plug into any monitor or TV to play them back.
gotta see what Apple comes up with here.
then, gotta find the $$$$!
I just got the new Neil Young album at the ITMS and you get two videos with it. I am buying a new iPod for my wife next week It is her B-day!!
Took them long enough! I might actually purchase an iPod if it turns out it finally has video capability! Be nice if it records video too though. Been waiting a long time for his inevitability…in the meantime I have my highly useful Archos that plays video…and records too.
el lamo if it’s just video iPods with music videos on iTMS. SJ has said that he’s not interested in introducing a device that plays video on a tiny screen. I don’t think a slightly smaller scrollwheel and a slightly larger screen on an iPod will change his mind. And he *certainly* won’t release a video iPod that’s aimed only at videographers.
He said in January that this is the year of HD. If he wants to really make good on that promise, then iTMS starts to sell HD-quality movies, using a subscription service. You download them to your computer via iTunes, then you stream them to you TV via Airport Express.
Take a look at this

I think he got it right.
The Year of HD is almost over…
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />
We already know HD iBooks are coming, right?
Yahoo. Bring it on…I’ve been postponing a purchase of a PMP in hopes that Apple would bring this out. At least they’re into the fray…and improvements (screen size) can be improved to meet customer desires.

Gwendoline: “where are the new powerbooks? Is Apple all about iPod these days?”
This is why Jon Rubenstein is the head of the iPod division. Consumer electronics is where the future is. iPod, iPod video, media set-top box, video enabled Airport Express…
Once the consumer electronics gets going, they will license OS X to PC hardware vendors and get out of the run of the mill hardware business. Of course, they will still make the “top of line” hardware for professional use (audio, graphics, video).
MW: perhaps
eurotrash –
“Records video too” ??? huh ??? That’s called a “video camera”. No hopes for that “feature”
MDN word: however
If the screen can go further down the iPod, then the logical thing would be turn the iPod on its side while watching a vid.
