Report: Apple to launch video iPod next week

“Apple Computer has begun production of a new version of its iPod digital music player that will be capable of playing videos… Reliable sources believe the iPod could be introduced as early as next week, possibly around the time Apple releases results from its fourth fiscal quarter of 2005,” Kasper Jade reports for Apple Insider. “…sources who claim to have seen the new iPod describe it as being similar to Apple’s 60GB iPod photo player, but several millimeters thinner [and features] a smaller click-wheel akin to that of the iPod nano’s, making way for a larger, higher-resolution color display that extends further down the face of the device.”

Jade reports, “The release of the iPod video is expected to be accompanied by a ‘major update’ to Apple’s iTunes music store that will include a significant number of music videos and other short video content.”

  1. The current iPod screen is already 2 inches, so if the new one has a smaller click wheel and larger screen, then it won’t be a 2 inch video screen then will it? My question is, are there enough people out there willing to pay $399+ for video capability on an iPod? I’m not so sure myself.

  2. The screen is still msaller than say,a PSP screen. That seems too small to me, but I just got a 20GB color iPod three weeks ago. This new iPod will probably cost $599US, like the Photo did when it debuted.

  3. My gut feeling is that this will make it very useful to videographers who want to pipe raw video into it as storage and then upload it to FCP to edit. i just hope it has a larger hardrive than what is current – DV eats up a lot of space.

And if it does HD, well, I’ll just have to kiss yo mama!

  4. “where are the new powerbooks? Is Apple all about iPod these days?”

Yeah, so much for any new Macs next week. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”raspberry” style=”border:0;” />

But then again, never dismiss a possible “one more thing” announcement.

  5. Took them long enough! I might actually purchase an iPod if it turns out it finally has video capability! Be nice if it records video too though. Been waiting a long time for his inevitability…in the meantime I have my highly useful Archos that plays video…and records too.

  6. el lamo if it’s just video iPods with music videos on iTMS. SJ has said that he’s not interested in introducing a device that plays video on a tiny screen. I don’t think a slightly smaller scrollwheel and a slightly larger screen on an iPod will change his mind. And he *certainly* won’t release a video iPod that’s aimed only at videographers.

He said in January that this is the year of HD. If he wants to really make good on that promise, then iTMS starts to sell HD-quality movies, using a subscription service. You download them to your computer via iTunes, then you stream them to you TV via Airport Express.

  7. Gwendoline: “where are the new powerbooks? Is Apple all about iPod these days?”

This is why Jon Rubenstein is the head of the iPod division. Consumer electronics is where the future is. iPod, iPod video, media set-top box, video enabled Airport Express…

Once the consumer electronics gets going, they will license OS X to PC hardware vendors and get out of the run of the mill hardware business. Of course, they will still make the “top of line” hardware for professional use (audio, graphics, video).
