“The iPod nano is fast becoming Apple’s next Cube. Like the diminutive desktop machine before it, the nano is being criticized for its alleged cosmetic defects. Apple’s support forums are littered with posts from irate nano owners who say the device’s screen scratches far more easily than it should,” John Paczkowski writes in a blog entitled, “Of course it didn’t scratch on Steve’s turtleneck. Those things are made out of sable, ya know” for SiliconValley.com’s “Good Morning Silicon Valley.”
“Too bad. Because the nano is an otherwise impressive little device. Perhaps, Apple can use some of the more than 40 percent profit margins it’s getting on the device to outfit it with a sturdier display,” Paczkowski writes.

There are cases for protecting iPods from scratches, if you think it is important to do so. I do not. My 4G iPod is naked most time and after a year it has the scars to prove it; it still sounds the same.

BRASSO for scratches. Cotton tshirt, add some Brasso, then buff. Repeat for an hour to get the iPod back to a sparkling, brand new appearance.
It’s a shame that such “comparisons” can be made with past products that came when Apple was “beleagured”– even though the older product was damn good, even if it wasn’t a top seller
The comparisons don’t actually mean anything in the first place, since they’re unfounded hyperbole meant to generate readership since the nano is near the top of internet searches, but it’s a shame anyway.

and a surefire way to do that is to write a negative article on just about anything iPod/Apple related then just sit back and watch that counter spin! anti-Apple types will respond with words of praise and Mac users will break out the flamethrowers. crimminy, why don’t we just wait and let the market sort it out? in the meanwhile, take articles like this with a grain o’ salt.

I never buy bleeding-edge software or hardware. Especially from Apple. Just wait a few months, and the problems will be fixed, and more features will be added.
Well Teflon, I agree that Apple has a reputation of releasing things before they are ready for prime-time. But, when you innovate and lead an industry, sometimes it is better to get it in the hands of real users and get their feedback.
reminds me of the iPod battery problem, and the iBook screen problem, both of which resulted in class-action law suits.
Since most in the media indeed are liberal elitist twits, I can certainly see the point that Tom was making. And don’t be so touchy there “dood” because those liberal elitist types will always be heard because they can’t ever keep their mouths shut. Of course, that certainly doesn’t mean they’ll ever say anything even remotely intelligent though.
Well, if I get a nano I will treat it at least as well as my 3G iPod and it should be OK. The thing is it is smaller and so will fit into more pockets. This plastic film looks like a good solution. Maybe Apple should include it in the box or sell it as an accessory?

Once Apple comes out with an 8GB model, go ahead and buy it. Cotten isn’t the culprit that scratches the shiney metal surface, rather the tiny bits of dirt that you can’t see, captured in the weave of the cloth. Dirt is nothing more than pulverized rock, which just happens to be much harder than steel. You would be very surprised just how dirty ‘clean’ cotten really is.

That is a ridiculous statement, which first of all proposes that the Cube was a failure, which it wasn’t. It is a much awarded example of outstanding industrial design, as it the iPod nano.
The FUDmuckers have their knives out now because they have no other way to deal with Apple. They have lost in the marketplace so they resort to yellow journalism and sabotage. While it is possible that the screen has problems, (innocent until proven guilty), it is being blown way out of proportion. I have handled all makes and models of iPods, including the nano, and I don’t see any material differences between them.
