Subtext of Apple CEO Steve Jobs’ September 7 presentation: I buried the competition

“In principle, Steve Jobs’ keynote [during Apple’s Special Event on September 7th] introduced the iPod nano and iTunes phone. But the real message was directed at his current and potential suppliers (music, movies, components), partners (Sony, Nokia et al), and competitors (Sony, Microsoft et al),” Nivi writes for Nivi.com.

“What was his message to these colleagues? I buried the competition. iTunes + iPod is the only digital content distribution platform that consumers are actually using (globally too). I have a monopsony on digital content distribution. Now quit f—ing around and supply me with content, components, and serious partnerships at a reasonable cost because I am the only game in town. And I may bury you next if you don’t join my team for the big win,” Nivi writes. “The subtext of Jobs’ pitch today was to tell his suppliers that today was Victory-Digital day for iTunes + iPod as the only end-to-end digital content distribution platform that customers are actually using.”

  1. “The subtext of Jobs’ pitch today was to tell his suppliers that today was Victory-Digital day
    ——–
Um, that would make it VD day. I don’t think there’ll be crowds gathering in Times Square for that one — although if there are, expect plenty of VD the next day.

  2. I don’t know, I agree to a point, but that sounds more like MS’s way of thinking. I prefer to think that Steve was saying, it’s happened… we rule… and this is why you want to be on our team. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  3. It amazes me that people are embracing putting all their hopes and dollars into one company – Apple.

I’d rather benefit from having 2 or 3 big players and a couple of smaller niche players in the digital content distribution business.

    1 – Apple – 50% market share
    2 – Other supplier – 25%
    3 – Other supplier – 20%
    4 – Niche suppliers – 5%

  4. man.. i can’t help smiling as i read this…

    wow…

I dont have shares or anything, it’s just hilarious to read …

come on.. jobs isn’t that pushy is he?

    ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  5. I can read minds. Nevertheless…the proof of Apple’s current success
is merely that they are shipping products worth buying and nothing
more. Seems like a wash…Apple’s not changing the music industry,
    who could?

  6. There are other players, but they suck and are not end to end providers. Apple is in the same place that MS is in the PC realm, except Apple is there due to quality, innovation and great marketing, rather than underhanded, sell cheap to everyone and their mother to get market share with a crap product business strategy.

  7. Puzzled…

Why would it amaze you that people have been putting all their hopes and dollars into one company for digital music. Corporate America, the U.S. government, and just about everyone else in the world have allowed themselves to be controled by one company…Microsoft. To me, a majority of computers being controled by a single software company is scarier than hell.

  8. I am still trying not to laugh too hard reading these little statements ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

“I would like to start by noting that I was also considering the following titles for this missive:

Steve Jobs to Suppliers: I Buried the Competition!

Steve Jobs to Phone Companies: Can you see my Middle Finger now?

Steve Jobs: Welcome to my Monopsony.”

  9. Puzzled:
The only the ONLY reason why I champion Apple to hold the reins and control where this horsie is going is because while people may not AGREE with Apple’s vision, theirs is the only vision that INCLUDES Mac users. As long as they’re top dog, maybe other companies will figure,”Hey, let’s make sure this is Mac compatible” (I’m looking at YOU Tivo).

  10. Just made me more interested. What were they hiding afterall?

    Don’t bother messing with the mind, go for the body, hehehe. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”zipper” style=”border:0;” />

  11. You shouldn’t discount the other services out there…including P2P
networks that are (and will forever) take anything they can get thier
    hands on for free.

Records, Tapes, and CDs are also still widely available. Apple is
delivering what the public and the music industry wants and needs.
    You can always shop elsewhere…monopoly??? I don’t see it. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smirk” style=”border:0;” />

CT ======]———- So twisted…sad, but true

  12. I had to look it up.

Monopsony: A market similar to a monopoly except that a large buyer not seller controls a large proportion of the market and drives the prices down. Sometimes referred to as the buyer’s monopoly.

    (Thanks to investopedia.com)

  13. Don’t get me wrong… I enjoy using my iPod and my Macs (plural). BUT… we bitch about MS being monopolistic, while Apple smiles and does exactly the same.

Why is okay for Apple to wield such power when we bitch about MS? Should I be happy that one company will have ultimate control over how I use my digital music devices?

If I gladly accept it, then that makes me a hypocrite!

  14. > Unpuzzerated wrote: while people may not AGREE with Apple’s vision, theirs is the only vision that INCLUDES Mac users.

Agreed… iPod and iTMS is pretty much the only show in town for the Mac world.

But… isn’t that Apple’s doing as much as it is their competitors?

  15. Puzzled makes a good point. We should hope for a serious competitor to Apple in the DRM space to stop Apple turning into another Microsoft.

But first, this competitor needs to think about supporting Macs. Windows Media is out of the picture on this front.

  16. “What was his message to these colleagues? I buried the competition.”

More like: ‘I ground the competition into a moist paste, threw them into a furnace, and THEN buried the ashes.’

Ouch. No wonder Rio decided to call it quits.

MaWo: ‘without’. As in, “I love my iPod and I can do without any other mp3 player.”

  17. Why can’t I get iTunes on my Linux box? Or on my Amiga? I can’t even get it on my Apple II! Hell, I can use all the other music services on Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Windows and even Microsoft Windows! We need choice!

  18. The digital music format was around long before Apple stepped in.

    We know…

CDs were ripe to be hacked and reformatted to run wild all over the WWW.

    We know…

    It wasn’t a joke.

    We know…

Apple stepped in and did something about it.

    Plain and simple…don’t blow things out of proportion. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”mad” style=”border:0;” />

Maybe someone should just combine a cash machiine (ATM) with
a music downloading service. That would make some sense, wouldn’t it?

    CT ======]————- Contrabranding
