If you want to put a Tiger on your computer but Apple doesn’t support your system, Other World Computing and XPostFacto can help.
With the help of attorney and Mac geek Ryan Rempel, OWC is able to offer XPostFacto, an application that allows users of certain unsupported Macintosh computers to run Mac OS X, OS X Server and Darwin. The latest version, XPostFacto 4.0, expands the support for ‘Legacy’ machines to run the latest OS X release, Apple’s highly acclaimed OS X 10.4 Tiger.
“People make a significant investment in their Macs, and we want to them to get the most use from them,” said Larry O’Connor, president of OWC in the press release. “Macs last an amazingly long time and XPostFacto helps them go that much longer, even allowing models built 10 years ago to continue to take advantage of Apple’s latest and greatest OS.
“A lot of people have some pretty decked-out PowerMac 7300-9600s, and PowerMac G3s – never mind the laptops and iMacs that no longer get Apple support. With XPostFacto, many of these systems can run the latest OS X versions and reap the benefits that Apple’s modern OS X has to offer.”
New in version 4.0:
• Supports Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
• Will install Mac OS X 10.2 through 10.4
• Runs on Mac OS 9.x or 10.2 through 10.4
• Works with machines that Apple originally supported in Mac OS X but no longer supports in 10.4 (the original iMac, original iBook, Beige G3, Wallstreet and Lombard PowerBooks)
• Works with some machines that Apple never supported for Mac OS X, such as the 7300-9600 series (G3 or G4 upgrade required for Mac OS X 10.3 and later)
• Avoids the misapplication of the 8 Gigabyte limit on “Old World” machines by the Mac OS X Installer

While XPostFacto may be downloaded at no cost, users are encouraged to pay a $25 registration fee to support the continued development of XPostFacto. In addition, registered users are provided additional access to OWC’s OS X tech forum and free notifications of XPostFacto updates and feature releases.
Cool, XPostFacto has been a great product for me over the years running OSX on my legacy 9500MP and 9600 machines with the original 604 CPUs. I’ll have to see if I can run Tiger on these systems.

Honestly, this product is cool and allowed my friend to give his computer-less neighbor an old PowerMac and load OSX on it.
(But, really: Dontcha think it’s time to get a new Mac?)
I have the original PowerBook G3 (Kanga) that I rarely use anymore. Any MDN readers using OS X XPostFacto on the Kanga?
MDN magic word is: “want”, as in I WANT to run X on my old PB…
My 9600, when I finally get it fully upgraded, will now be able to “officially” run Tiger; previously, Tiger could be gimped on to the machine withe the previous XPostFacto version
Its sad to know that OWC offers XPostFacto to slow down the Apple’s marketshare. If OWC loves Mac, OWC should do something like sell RAM chips to mac users, help windows users switch to Mac, encourage Corp and institution to buy new mac to Windows users, etc.
Once Apple reaches 70 to 80 percent of marketshare, XPostFacto .. umm may…be …a good idea… for school or for a developing country.

This is great news for my Beige G3 at home, stuck on 10.2.8 now. I’ll even upgrade the CPU if it works.
