Dell plans expansion of Dell DJ portable music player line

“Dell is doing its own little ditty. This holiday coming season, Dell Inc. plans to offer three new Dell DJ portable music players, starting with a tiny, flash memory-based model called the Dell DJ Ditty, sources familiar with the company’s plans said,” John G. Spooner reports for PC Magazine. “The DJ Ditty… will come with a built-in LCD screen and an FM radio receiver, two things that are not available on Apple’s flash-based iPod Shuffle—buyers will have to step up to the new Apple iPod Nano to gain an LCD screen, for example—and it’s also planning to add color screens and an option that adds XM Satellite Radio to its hard drive-based Pocket DJ and Dell DJ models, the sources said. The Ditty DJ, which could bow as early as next week, will offer 512MB of memory and cost under $100, the sources said.”

“The DJ Ditty will be packaged with different colored caps that people can install, depending on their taste, the source said. Dell’s new Pocket DJ and Dell DJ models, meanwhile, will come out later this fall, the sources said. Aside from replacing the players’ blue screens with color screens—a feature that also allows the player to show people’s digital photos—Dell will add FM tuners to its Pocket DJ and Dell DJ, sources familiar with its plans said,” Spooner reports.

  1. All together now!

He sees you when you’re sleeping.
    He knows when you’re awake.
He knows if you’ve been bad or good,
So be good for goodness sake!

    Oh, you better watch out!

  2. Okay, what did I miss? Anyone know why Apple stock is down $1.21 (US)? Certainly not on the “news” above.

Did Apple announce again what an outstanding quarter it had? Perhaps it’s the dire prediction that Apple is going to run out of stock of the new iPod nano? Darn customers, they just keep buying iPods.

    Peace.

  3. This is great. The more the merrier. Apples gonna send the competion rocketing to the poor house. Why invest thousands or a couple of million on something that ain’t gonna bring in the returns/profits. I know the iPod won’t hold the throne forever but at the moment it is King. A bit like releasing a movie on the same day as Star wars or Lord of the Rings or some other huge blockbuster. No matter what your opinion of some of the new Star Wars movies was, a huge majority of the planet saw them. And thats what counts, dosn’t matter if you thought it was crap, you don’t get your 12 bucks back.
Dell should pump money into computers thats what they do best.

  4. Frank: same here. Probably because I hardly ever listen to radio (except for NPR stuff), I don’t see the need for having FM tuners on my music players. As for most stations, they are 1) top 40 (not interested) 2) religious (not interested) 3) spanish (mildly interesting, esp. accordions) 4) country (not interested) or 5) talk (def. not interested). I had a moto v60 cell phone once with an FM tuner adapter. The reception was so shitty, the sound so tinny, i think Iused it maybe twice.

  5. Speaking of Dell, what’s up with hiring a spokeswoman who lisps?

You know Dell – always on the cheap!

Kinda like the people they payed to come up with “Ditty”. I don’t think I’ve ever heard anything more ludicrous.

  6. Lurker_PC: Why did Apple’s stock drop? Profit taking. $50-ish was the general target, and lots of people (myself included) had automatic sale orders for when it hit that number. So now there are lots of shares for sale.

Also, the market had a generally down day yesterday.
