Bob ‘Dr. Mac’ Levitus: ‘deciding to renew Apple’s .Mac membership a no-brainer’

“My .Mac membership is about to expire, but deciding to renew it at $100 a year was a no-brainer. After all, having a .Mac membership makes me appear far more talented than I actually am. And .Mac offers other features I don’t want to do without,” Bob Levitus reports for The Houston Chronicle.

Levitus reports, “The feature I find most compelling is the way .Mac is seamlessly integrated with iPhoto. With this killer combination I can quickly and easily create Web-based photo galleries complete with thumbnail images and built-in slide shows with just a few clicks of the mouse. There are more than a dozen beautiful page templates, and customizing them with text couldn’t be easier.”

“So first and foremost, .Mac makes me appear to be a Web page genius, but that’s only part of its appeal. As a .Mac member you get a 250-megabyte personal hard disk on the Internet, or iDisk. It can host Web pages, share files and store backups of important files,” Levitus reports. “I’ve had my .Mac membership for years, and it just keeps getting better.”

  1. Last meaningful upgrade to .Mac was move to 250 megabytes…this is totally inadquate…they could go to at least 1 gig so we could move ordinary files around etc. I am extremely disappointed with the insignificant amount of space…you could buy an 80 gig hard drive nowadays for this outrageous fee.

  2. If .Mac had at Least 1GB of storage..I would sign up in one rotation of a spinning beach ball of death. I echo the sentiments of “The Mel” …”Are you listening Apple¿” (probably not, as Steve Jobs has the tons of cash from the iPod sales piling in up to his ears and eyes and blocking them.)

How many people are using Gmail, Yahoo etc. 1GB and over storage basically for free? (has to be well over 25 million each). There are an estimated 25 million Macintosh users worldwide. It would seem to be very easy for Apple to up the limit to just 1GB. Even the smallest podunk companies are giving away 1GB now. Apple needs to step up, and give people more for their $100 a year.

  3. Renewing is a no brainer for me. I use most of the features. There are a few things that need improving, longer captions under my photos, bigger iDisk space, and faster iDisk copying. I’ll be sending them a note. They added the black background for photos after I (and I’m assuming others) complained/suggested that one. Here’s what it looks like!
