Apple’s iTunes 5 provides hints of future iTunes Video Store

“Bloggers have discovered an image resource within iTunes 5 that suggests Apple has future plans for a video store. Three buttons with the terms ‘Gift Video,’ ‘Buy Video,’ and ‘Add Video’ were found along with references to a ‘protected MPEG-4 video file’ within text strings in the code of iTunes 5,” Ed Oswald reports for BetaNews.

More in Oswald’s brief report here.

  1. Yeah, I’m with LordRobin on this one, too.

It just means the ubergeeks at Apple planted this little seed to see how long it would take for someone to find it, so they could move on to the next place to hide the random text string here and there as fodder for the rumor sites… after all, it’s the buzz that keeps things interesting come announcement time! ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”rolleyes” style=”border:0;” />

  2. I agree with those who suggest a vPod is not the best vehicle for video downloaded from ITMS.
I have a mac mini hooked up via DVI to a 42 inch High Def plasma TV, and it’s awesome for showing photos or iMovies. Now all I want is some good broadcast material, and the best way to get this would be to buy it from ITMS. That way I won’t have to wait for the HD/Blueray spat to be resolved before watching high def Hollywood movies.

  3. Totally agree with Greg Thurmann,
Apple is and will not be interested in a video iPod. Once the Intel deal is working, they’ll be able to develop a proper tablet form-factor.
Based on the developments in iTunes, as many people mentioned already, my best guess is that it will become the standard entertainment-hub for your recliner. Basically the (better) alternative for Windows Media Centre.
Call it an Operating System on it’s own or extra OS-layer. A Down-sized (or locked up) OS X behind it, and with following functionality:
    – 12″ Screen (Touch-screen likely)
    – infrared
    – iTunes-like main screen
    – wireless/video streaming capability, in combination with upgraded Airport Express
    – remote control functions in iTunes to control your tv/stereo/security/curtains/light (with design tools to program/develop/design the screen as you wish)
    – built in camera
    – capable of playing video-content (preview function, see next point)
    – flash memory, no HDD, all media-content in principle on your home-computer which acts as a wireless media server for the
    – Web browsing, again through iTunes.

MDN MW ‘get’ as in: ‘you finally get it?’

  4. Mike A, I already have a Video Playlist. I’ve imported numerous videos into iTunes and created a smart playlist aptly titled “Movies” that “Kind” contains “QuickTime” or “Movie”. This allows me to keep up with all the silly little movies I download, some family clips I enjoy showing people at home, and video podcasts as well.
When you do a search in iTunes 5 the search bar appears and Video is one of the options. Now I wish that Lyrics was an option so you could search for specific word or phrases. And if anyone is interested in populating their iTunes library with lyrics, I highly recommend pearLyrics! I have no personal or professional affiliation, but I used it and it found lyrics for almost 8000 of my tracks!
