“Apple will upgrade both its iPod mini and iPod shuffle lines of music players, but most likely not at its media event next week,” Ryan Katz reports for Think Secret. “Apple’s popular iPod mini will pitch its hard drive and move entirely to solid state media, a move that sources familiar with the new design say will shave 20 to 25 percent off the size of the unit. The new iPod mini, which is currently expected to be introduced at Apple Expo Paris on September 20, will be available in three capacities: 4GB, 6GB, and 8GB. The iPod mini will sport dual NAND flash memory chips to achieve those higher capacities.”
Katz reports, “The new iPod mini will sport a color screen that’s slightly smaller than the current version. Sources say the screen will measure 1.467 inches, down from 1.67 inches, but will feature a higher resolution: 176 x 132, up from 138 x 110.”
More details, including rumored pricing, plus information that Apple will also introduce a 2GB iPod shuffle, in the full article here.
A solid state iPod mini with a color screen. Awesome.
I can’t imagine the iPod mini getting any smaller or lighter.
Oh yes, it can get smaller…

I just hope they don’t go overboard on the size and weight reduction. making something compact is all well and good but making it so for the sake of it is pointless, you can end up making it too small and if it’s too light it can feel insubstantial. That said, Apple do have the best designers on the planet.
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”LOL” style=”border:0;” /> Sorry, I just Googled “iPod flea” and it was one of the first ones to come up, but thanks for straightening me out.

CT ======]————– Did you want magic words?
Steve’s probably calling in an air strike on Think Secret right now.
Color, Flash, iPod Mini’s. Yeah Baby.
Is the colour screen necessary? The monochrome screens consume less power and keep the focus on music.

I’m sure you can still buy an older B&W screen. If Apple wants to keep the sales up, they need color.
No moving parts, longer battery life, smaller & lighter… good
Could easily be redesigned around an easily replaceable Lithium Battery… VERY GOOD.
Rather than make it smaller, they should give it a bigger battery.
No worries confused dude, Apple already put low power components in and solid state requires even less power (to say nothing of durability) than spinning drives. Combine this with the latest battery technology and we should easily have more than 15 hours per.
That being said, swappble batteries (ala laptops) would be amazing.
