RUMOR: Apple to switch entire ‘iPod mini’ line to flash memory, higher resolution color screens

“Apple will upgrade both its iPod mini and iPod shuffle lines of music players, but most likely not at its media event next week,” Ryan Katz reports for Think Secret. “Apple’s popular iPod mini will pitch its hard drive and move entirely to solid state media, a move that sources familiar with the new design say will shave 20 to 25 percent off the size of the unit. The new iPod mini, which is currently expected to be introduced at Apple Expo Paris on September 20, will be available in three capacities: 4GB, 6GB, and 8GB. The iPod mini will sport dual NAND flash memory chips to achieve those higher capacities.”

Katz reports, “The new iPod mini will sport a color screen that’s slightly smaller than the current version. Sources say the screen will measure 1.467 inches, down from 1.67 inches, but will feature a higher resolution: 176 x 132, up from 138 x 110.”

  1. I just hope they don’t go overboard on the size and weight reduction. making something compact is all well and good but making it so for the sake of it is pointless, you can end up making it too small and if it’s too light it can feel insubstantial. That said, Apple do have the best designers on the planet.

  2. No worries confused dude, Apple already put low power components in and solid state requires even less power (to say nothing of durability) than spinning drives. Combine this with the latest battery technology and we should easily have more than 15 hours per.

That being said, swappble batteries (ala laptops) would be amazing.
