Apple announces ‘special event’ to be held September 7th

Apple has sent out invitations via email to selected media outlets announcing a special event on Wednesday, September 7, 2005 to be held at the Moscone Center in San Francisco.

The email features the line, “1,000 songs in your pocket changed everything. Here we go again.”

Apple introduced the iPod on October 23, 2001, describing the device as “a breakthrough MP3 music player that packs up to 1,000 CD-quality songs into an ultra-portable, 6.5 ounce design that fits in your pocket.”
Motorola iTunes Phone and/or something else?

  1. This better be ROKR…my phone is on it’s last legs. Been waiting on this since MacWorld in January. Motorola is getting my money either way, ROKR or RAZR, but I would rather have iTunes capability.

MDN Magic Word “cannot” as in I cannot wait to buy my new phone!

  2. Wake me when there is news about Mac computers, YAAAAAAAAAWN!!!! Apple has become 95% iPod/iTunes and 5% Mac computers. Good news for shareholders I suppose, but bad news for us Mac zealots who think of iPods as one of many neat Mac periperhals and not the primary product of a one-time computer company.

That’s what Apple expo Paris will be for.

As far as this event is concerned, I think it will be much more than a phone. I think we’ll finally get iTunes 5 and the 5th generation iPod

  4. I do not think there will be any new iPods. The education promotion for a free iPod mini with the purchase of a Mac does not end until 9/24, so we will not see any new iPods before this promotion ends. This has got to be the iTunes phone.

  5. If this is just a “special event,” it’s not likely to be a major new Apple product like video on iPod. Much more likely to be the phone, which Motorola has said will be ready in September and should have its own “event.”

Meh. Too many false starts. Unless there’s real synergy and not just phone + mp3s (which I’ve had in my pocket for a year now), this will be anti-climactic.

Anything big & totally new would be announced at a Macworld or similar major event.

  6. No, Winston is not right. They are not comparing the impact of this announcement to anything. They simply said… here we go again.

A major announcement will compe at Apple Paris expo and not before…

  7. FAR OUT STUFF:-

Apple Digital Camera (it will come eventually)
iPod Video (not on screen movies – more play thru)
    New Airport/Home Device

    REALITY:-

    MotoPodoFono
    iTunes Subscriptions
    …iYawn

…its all up in the ‘air’…

  8. I would be more inclined to “think different” if the current iPod promotion ended on say 9/6.. but since it is still going till 9/24 there is no way they will announce a new iPod. Apple never continues a promotion on an old product once a new one has been introduced..

  9. iTunes phone IMO doesn’t “change everything” the way the iPod did. I find it hard to believe that Apple would promote the ROKR in this way. They only rumored products that fit this category would be an iPod Video, but more importantly a 5.0 iTunes with Video and other media downloads for a fee (disney, ABC, ESPN, Pixar?, other movies?). If it is only the phone then I must put more faith in the Apple marketing team than they deserve. The phone alone certainly doesn’t change everything and isn’t anything unexpected at all.
