Report: Motorola to debut ROKR Apple iTunes phone on September 7

“Motorola is planning to introduce the first of its much anticipated ROKR iTunes music phones in New York City early next month,” Kasper Jade reports for Apple Insider. “According to sources familiar with the wireless company’s plans, Motorola is preparing to unveil the phones at a special media event currently scheduled to take place Wednesday, September 7th at a venue on Manhattan’s West Side.”

“It’s unclear whether Apple’s Steve Jobs will fly cross-country for the launch, Motorola chief executive Ed Zander is already scheduled to be in Manhattan on the morning of the 7th to deliver a keynote speech at the Eighth Annual Kaufman Bros. Investment Conference,” Jade reports.

Sam Gustin reports for The New York Post, “News of the phone leaked out earlier this week when the Federal Communications Commission posted pictures and the manual for Motorola’s iTunes-equipped E790 phone on a government Web site, indicating it had approved the phone for use on U.S. mobile networks… Apple and Motorola officials confirmed the phone would roll out in a matter of weeks… [The phone] will have a VGA-quality camera, stereo speakers, and will be able to hold a gigabyte of songs or more on removable thumbnail sized “mini-SD” flash storage cards, according to the manual on the FCC Web site. The phone will operate on GSM cellular networks and support short-range Bluetooth connectivity as well.”

  1. Suuuuuuuurrrre they are! I’ll believe it when I see it. I think they could have come up with a better name for it. It took me a while to figure out that it was supposed to be pronounced “Rocker”. At first I thought it was “Roker” like Al Roker. I thought maybe it was just a new slim version of a phone that used to be bulbous. Either way, not the coolest name.

  2. VGA CAMERA??!?!?!?!?!

so they give it itunes but totally go against the fact that the market for high quality cameras in fones is now bigger than the digital camera market itself!

one step forward two steps back.

europeans will buy this fone for the first couple of months – and then the euro carriers will have to start giving it away for free.

    bah humbug.

  3. If it really is just that ugly E790, don’t bother with the big event. Just fax out a press release. That thing is nothing to get excited about. They could at least use the RAZR phone, couldn’t they? Decked out with a full Apple-designed UI instead of just slapping iTunes onto Moto’s. And maybe find some room for a scroll wheel? C’mon Apple, pimp my phone!

  4. I just don’t care anymore. There was a time when I had some interest but this PR debacle has worn me out.

If I were still interested in a phone (I alreay have an iPod), I would investigate the black RAZR because it looks cool. I don’t know how good it is, though.

iTunes phone? I don’t think so.

  5. After watching, this protracted it’s coming it’s not coming debacle all summer, and reading the posts above—how everone has lost interest in this dragged out launch…

It makes me appreciate the Apple method of saying nothing till you are able to ship, then announcing it to great fanfare and capitalizing on the instant media hype.

More evidence of Apple, “thinking different” and obviously, thinking better.

  6. All very embarrassing. I guess that is why Steve Jobs doesn’t like making public announcements about pre-release products. Well at least not a year away. Apple do have problems making their shipping dates on new products, but at least for the most part they keep mum about them until it gets close to being available.

  7. This phone will have to be something that is totally out of this world if it hopes be anything more then a punch line.

If Steve was flying over for the keynote i would tune in just because it would have to have a bunch of bling bling that we don’t know about. Otherwise i bet he will stay as far away as he can.
