Microsoft, Texas Instruments reps expect Apple ‘iPod video’ by end of year

“Even Apple’s constituents are expecting a new video-enabled iPod by the end of the year,” Michael Singer writes in the CNET Apple Blog. “Representatives with Microsoft and Texas Instruments recently said Apple will more than likely be one of two companies announcing portable video players before the end of January 2006; creating yet another new trend in multi-function gadgets. ‘From a chip standpoint there is no reason that they couldn’t release a video iPod,’ Doug Rasor, TI’s vice president and strategic marketing manager said during the company’s recent ‘Toy Tour’ press junket in San Francisco. Apple has widely been expected by insiders and enthusiasts to release a video-enabled iPod in September.”

“Despite its public dismissal of a video iPod, Apple has left the iPod evolution door wide open ever since last year’s release of the iPod photo with a color screen,” Singer writes. “More recently, Apple started tinkering with selling video clips on its iTunes Music Store and included the mention of the word video in some patents filed in 2004. Even Microsoft is predicting a video iPod by year’s end. Erik Huggers, a senior director with Microsoft’s Windows client division said Microsoft fully expects a video-enabled iPod and that Apple should expect Microsoft to rally its own troops in the next few months.”

  1. By constituents the poster Mark Singer means ‘those that surround Apple’, yes can mean Mac users of all types such as most of you here. Can’t say all as some are Windows users, enjoy I say to thee and make yourself feel even worse!

I think the main context of the above is the industry itself in and around Cupertino, those third party manufacturers, competitors* and suppliers to Apple Computer, Inc, 1 Infinite Loop…

*competitors in that as they have nothing to compete with in terms of on the shelf products similar to Apple’s and are now resorting to underhand tactics in order to gain leverage. Microcrap are trying the ‘let’s be nice now to Apple and lure them into a false sense of security’ ploy.

“In a world without walls or boundaries who needs windows or gates”.

  2. I think when Winston mentioned the TI-99, he was talking about the TI-99/4(A) Home Computer, not graphing calculators.

The thing is ridiculously obsolete now, but it was quite a machine for its time. 1981, most everyone is still dinking around in DOS with a green and black screen, and the TI has color graphics, text to speech, a simple GUI (not based on windows and mouse, but still), and expansion options with stuff like speech recognition.

Probably surpassed only by the Apple II in terms of design.

  3. The “rallied troops” have been rallying for quite a while now. Their video players are already on the market and consumers apparently don’t find value in them. Apple most assuredly will have a better solution to market than MS. Rallied troops? Naw. More like beleageured stick figures desperately scouring whatever candy can be found in Microsoft’s waiting room at best.

  4. Does anyone think it is a little strange that Portable Media Centre is not mentioned any more? Last year we were being told that PMC devices were going to be “iPod Killers” but today no-one mentions them at all. What happened?
