Piper Jaffray selects Apple Computer as top large cap pick for rest of 2005

“Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster selected Apple Computer (AAPL) as his top large capitalization pick for the rest of 2005, citing expectations for several new product introductions, continued market share gains for Mac products and the belief that the company’s outlook is conservative,” Dow Jones Newswires reports.

“‘Apple’s domination in digital music is a critical piece to the story, but we do not believe iPod is the only growth avenue for the company,’ analyst Gene Munster said in a research note to clients,” Dow Jones Newswires reports.

Munster’s note stated that even minimal upside to Macintosh market share would have a “significant impact on earnings” and the analyst reiterated his “outperform” rating and $52 price target.

Ed Lin reports for Forbes, “Macintosh market share increased 0.2% in each of the last three quarters, and a continuation of 0.2% market-share gains through the end of calendar 2006 “would lead to average calendar 2006 Macintosh market share of 3.4%,” Piper Jaffray said.”

Lin reports, “Apple’s guidance for the fiscal fourth quarter ending September is conservative because the company has factored in a negative impact in the Mac segment due to the Intel partnership announcement, but Piper Jaffray said Apple indicated that it has not seen a slowdown in Mac sales since the June announcement. In addition, Apple has not seen a sequentially flat or down September quarter in three years, and the average quarter-over-quarter change in revenue to September from June over the last three years is more than 10%.”
