Report: Apple and Gap soon to team on iTunes Music Store promo

“Apple Computer and clothing retailer the Gap are preparing to kick-off a promotion that will offer Gap customers free iTunes songs for trying on clothing at its retail stores,” Kasper Jade reports for AppleInsider. “Word of the partnership comes just ahead of the back-to-school shopping season, where millions of consumers traditionally flood US shopping malls and clothing retailers in search of the latest fall fashions.”

Jade reveals more details in his full article here.

MacDailyNews Take: This sounds like a winner. The average Gap customer would be a great fit with Apple’s iTunes Music Store. They ought to put iPods in Gap’s nearly 3,000 worldwide stores while they’re at it.

  1. Cargo pants with an iPod sized pocket extra pocket.

    OR

a jacket with built in speakers/earbuds.

How about an iPod clipped on a pair of Oakley Glasses… like the new RAZR Shades by Motorola/Oakley. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”tongue rolleye” style=”border:0;” />

  2. Actually – ipods at the gap is a frickin’ great idea. Somebody call apple –

could just be a short term promotion to give apple and the gap lots of free press.

Sell ipod-minis at the gap bundled with a $10 itunes gift card for 2 to 6 months.

Seriously – somebody call apple marketing. Old navy would work just as well as Gap. (You could even sell them from the Gap website too.)

This would put ipods in every mall in america and drive more foot traffic to the gap.

  3. I always thought it would be a great idea to put iPods in different retail locations. The idea would work especially well for the shuffle, in locations such as Gap. One nice idea might be to put shuffles preloaded with albums/audiobooks in coffee shops. Or even get iPod booths out there so you can put whatever you want on yourself. Conversely I always thought it a shame Apple didn’t put coffee bars in its retail stores. Would have added to the community feel more.

  4. Now i think we all know there is some real Board of Directors Incest going on here.. SJ sits on GAP board, right?

    ANd Al Gore is somehow involved.. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  5. They both have people dancing in their ads… What better way to do a co-op promotion?!?!
Have the kiddies dance around in their Gap khakis with the little white box of goodness in their hand or on their hip!!

  6. Pithy, egarc, pithy. Good one.

You’re missing the point Ray. Apple isn’t trying to get current iTMS customers to go to a Gap store (although Gap is). Apple wants access to Gap’s customers… with “back to school” just around the corner, that’s a lot of folks who may not have tried the iTunes store.

  7. NoMacForYou is right. Gosh, I had better rid my home, office, and car of the plague that is Apple. I can’t believe I didn’t see this before. I was blind. BLIND, I tell you. Darn below-par products. Below par. Darn.

Thanks NoMacForYou. You have saved another poor soul from the limbo of below-par Apple products. It must have been the eloquence with which you delivered your point of view.

So. Uh. Now what? Windows? Linux? Creative? Napster? Are these choices at par? ABOVE par? Uh… NoMacForYou? Could you please define “par”?

    Sheesh. Who’s the dolt here?

  8. No Mac For You- Jealousy will get you nowhere.

But to be serious this is exactly the sort of promotion that Apple should be doing more of. Much cheaper and effective than wall to wall advertising if utilised well and avoids overkill by adding variation. Advertise hard for a period then promoting the products like this will be extremely effective marketing.
