More info about Apple’s reported iPod+iTunes video talks

“Apple Computer has approached several major record companies about selling music videos through its iTunes store, according to a published report Monday. That could be a precursor to an iPod that plays video,” CNN/Money reports. “The Wall Street Journal reported the negotiations Monday, although an Apple spokeswoman declined to comment to the paper on what she termed ‘rumors and speculation’ about the company’s plans. Apple has told some entertainment-industry executives that it could announce a video iPod by September, according to the article.”

“The paper also reports Apple recently licensed a chip from a subsidiary of Broadcom Corp. that could be used to display video on portable devices, although it can also be used for more sophisticated graphics. ‘I believe it’s inevitable,’ Richard Doherty, an analyst with Envisioneering Group, a research and consulting firm in Seaford, N.Y., says of a video iPod,” CNN/Money reports.

“Analysts see the development as likely because of Apple’s strength in video software, including the Quicktime movie format and video-editing software, such as Final Cut Pro and iMovie,” The Associated Press reports.

Not to mention Steve Jobs’ other hugely successful company, Pixar. If he really wants to leverage one company’s strength to help the other, why not have Pixar produce a series of shorts exclusively for the video Pod? PSP et al. need not apply…

  2. uh, no need for a new name folks. Thats why the iPod has such a non-music related name to begin with. They knew years ago when they first started this craze that it would ultimately morph into other devices. They didnt call it The iTunes Music Player or the iMusic or whatever. iPod is a function-agnostic name that applies to music videos or whatever. I can think of a few more whatevers but if you looks at the direction this is heading, you can probably guess for yourself.

wow great MW’s for me today
MW ‘planning’ as in, Apple was planning ahead by giving the iPod a non music related name

  3. Good call, yankees suck… But I think that there is going to be a more condensed device and much more affordable.

I can’t wait for the new Newton type device to be released. Apple has to have something in the pipeline that allows for more direct input and output. iPods are nice to carry info around, but not real easy to put info into it while you’re on a plane or in a meeting. And you can’t output anything that wasn’t transferred in originally, like text notes or emails…

  4. This is a great way for Apple to get into video NOW without having to wait on what the REAL prize is..

    HD Movies.

While we all wait on faster downloads capicity to easily mange 5 Gigs and more of HD content for a single movie, Apple gets into the video download now…. just in a smaller way

Smaller downloads are best to start with because:
    1. SD content/ as opposed to HD content,
    2. Music Videos/ as opposed to longer form feature length movies
    3. Music over Movies fits within the scope if iTunes
    4. Not such a quantuam leap in data to download so it doesn’t put a huge strain on curret capacity.

  5. All the talk is about iTunes selling and syncing video with iPod but what about more PVR functionality? I want the ability to record (encode) TV shows/movies from iTunes (much like encoding an audio CD) and sync and play with either Quicktime or iPod. This, to me, would be much more useful and widespread than initial movie downloads. It would be easier to do (by incorporating the video/audio feeds through the next gen Intel computers). Then, if Apple wanted to charge for specific episode downloads of shows with no advertising, they could do it in a much easier environment. iTunes would quickly become the Audio/TV catalyst the industry needs. This would then completely open up the Movie download market. Just think if you could record news/sports/episodes for playback while commuting? You could also encode your DVD’s and take movies on the go. The big question is the size of the iPod’s screen which would have to be increased slightly for meaningful video viewing. This would come through Intel’s X-Scale processors. Interesting at least even if Apple isn’t headed in this direction..

  6. I can’t see a video iPod selling very well. However, I can see a video iPod working if you could connect it to your TV and play the movie through it. It would be nice if you could download the movie like an iTunes song into your video iPod and then connect it to your TV to watch the movie.

  7. better yet, how about podcasts but for TV shows.

Lets say I missed the latest episode of my favorite TV show (example: the simpsons), imagine if i could just buy it and download just like a podcast.

  8. How about PowerPod?

If you could play video on an iPod what other functions would it have other than music videos and movies?

What about downloadable games and apps like a cell phone with iTunes?

How about built-in camera or video camera?

How about Pod OS1 vs. Palm and Windows M.?

How about iTunes Mac and PC Software Store with free 30 day trials.

  9. I think we’ll have iPod as the name of the video playerts, and iPod light as the name f the mp3 payers.

I would like to see the following names used:
PowerPod (the current iPod with video added)
iPod (the current iPod mini w/ a video option)
    MiniPod (the current Shuffle)

These names match with the current lines of Power Mac, iMac, and Mac Mini.
