Apple’s WebObjects now included free in Mac OS X Tiger developer tools

“Apple has decided to make WebObjects available for free within its Mac OS X 10.4 “Tiger” developer tools,” Jonny Evans reports for Macworld UK. “WebObjects is a Java-based application-server and builder for Web publishing and internal application building. It’s often used for ecommerce applications, and can even produce pure Java applications that can be run on non-Mac platforms.”

“The company released WebObjects deployment software for free with Xserves (as part of the Mac OS X Server package) in June 2002, but the move to a wider distribution is regarded as significant – not least because until May 2000 the software cost $50,000,” Evans reports. “WebObjects 5.3 now ships with Xcode v2.1 and needs Mac OS X 10.4 to run. Commenting on this one experienced enterprise developer called the move, ‘amazing.'”

  1. If Apple can make a separation between development and deployment licenses, that would be great for Apple’s bottom line. Anyone can try it and use it on a small scale, but if you want to run a major website, you need to upgrade the full license.

If businesses can be hooked, that would be great. Then people will buy what they have at work.

  2. The end is near…

And moments after a jump to the Intel hardware…

    Apple is giving away WebObjects.

Nobody in the “real IT world” is going to use a free product for an enterprise net application framework.

Thank you but no thanks we will stick with the proven and supported .NET framework provided by MicroSoft.

  3. I love Sputnik’s input. All that doom and gloom reminds me of my tech support days with the Apple Assistance Center. 97-98, just around Jobs’ return. Things WERE pretty aweful for Apple then. And all the buzz was Apple’s demise — day after day, month after month. Quite depressing, really.

  4. sputnik: why do you put the copyright mark on your posts.

Copyrights are for something of value, but then again I just wasted valuable time posting this, so I guess you win one.

  5. Reality Check:

WebObjects Developer is distributed free on the Xcode Tools 2.1 CD. This does not mean that it will always be free, just that it is for the moment.

Actually, WebObjects Developer has been ‘free’ to developers for quite some time now. But, this was only available by download through the Apple Developer Connection and with an expiring license key that they would update periodically.

WebObjects Deployment will likely remain a non-free product, however.

You can developer WebObjects applications using the WebObjects Developer product, but can not deploy WebObjects applications using it, for that you must use the WebObjects Deployment package.

However, WebObjects Deployment is included (free) with Mac OS X Server, with which you can deploy applications. You can deploy applications on Windows 2000 Server or Solaris 8, but for those platforms you must purchase a copy for $699, which is still significantly less than the original $50,000 price.
