Windows PCs can’t match Apple’s iMac G5 design or run Mac OS X Tiger operating system

“Nothing enhances a computer like an oversize display that pulses with color on graphically rich Web pages and also renders text with startling clarity, as when the eye doctor clamps a lens in place and all the blurry letters snap into focus,” Chris Cobb writes for The Orlando Sentinal. “Everything in the digitized world, from Impressionist downloads to Power Point presentations, looks its best on the 20-inch at the heart of Apple’s revised iMac G5 desktop systems.”

“There are a slew of Windows machines with roughly equal features that undercut the iMac on price. But they don’t match its clever design — 2 inches thick, a single cord trailing out of its backside — and they don’t run the slick new Mac OS X operating system, Tiger,” Cobb writes.

Full article here.

MacDailyNews Note: Cobb somewhat incorrectly states, “You can attach a second monitor, but it only mirrors what’s on the built-in screen.” That’s true by default, but the iMac G5’s video card will allow for monitor spanning, too. Apple uses monitor mirroring vs. monitor spanning to differentiate their “professional” Macs (Power Mac G5, PowerBook G4) from their “consumer” Macs. All you need is Screen Spanning Doctor to enable monitor spanning in iMacs — and iBooks and eMacs, too!

  1. I walked into a local computer store and looked around a bit.

A salesperson asked , “May I help you?”

“Yes” I replied, “I saw an ad on tv about WIndows Xp and how versatile it is.”

“Yes, sir, all of our computers come with Xp pre-installed.”

“And they all come with Apple’s iLife applications like iPhoto, iMovie HD and iDVD. right?”

“Sorry, Sir, but Xp cannot run those programs.”

“I guess it’s not that versatile, because those are the ones I am use to on my Mac. But, that’s okay, just show me the ones that are like my old Mac. The ones with no virus problems.”

“Sorry, sir, but it is Xp that has virus problems and you need to spend extra money for virus and spyware programs as well as an annual fee to keep them updated.”

“Oh, ummm… so you only sell computers that I must pay extra for to keep safe?”

“Well, Sir, all computers have viruses.”

“No body told my 6 year old iMac that. Let me see what the guys at the Apple store have to say. Thanks for your time. Bye!” …and I walked out.

  2. What can I say. I got my 20″ Imac yesterday after 13 years on the dark side. Its beautiful. The startup alone with all the automatic settings just blew me away. My wife is pissed beacuse I´going on 8 hours on a saturday in front of my new toy. I`ll be right there – I just have to check out this and that. She just went shopping. I hope she stays out some hours

  3. Aw come on, don’t pick on the poor PC store guys. They barely know enough about Wintel boxes to explain why people should purchase the extended warranty and the on-site maintenance service schedule. You can’t expect them to know the difference between a Mac and a PC, or their asses and a hole in the ground, or genuine security and a protection racket.

You’re welcome. That second link looks a lot better in Camino than Safari. By the way, here’s one more from the end of March 2001.

That’s enough for the moment. There’s a whole bunch more on web.archive.org, but a lot have missing graphics.

Anyway, back to what I was doing before I was so easily distracted….

  5. Can this be true?:

“You can attach a second monitor, but it only mirrors what’s on the built-in screen. Many systems let you extend your workspace across two displays rather than duplicating the same image on each.”

If so it seems unfortunate, if untrue it needs some contradiction ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  6. MIke dL B Simoni sez: “…………Thanks for your time. Bye!” …and I walked out.”

    Wow, you really impressed him….not.
What is the point of confronting some PC sales guy other than to show that you are some arrogant Mac fan boy?
Did you change anybody´s mind regarding any computer?
Did it make you feel better – self affirmation that your 6 year old mac was a wise decision?
Next go to a Ford car dealer and do the same thing, but use a BMW or Mercedes as your car.
Or did you just make the whole thing up…..

  7. Cause my 1.67Ghz 128MB Graphics/2GB RAM/100GB HD 15″ PowerBook that my work gave me is MY baby, the Mac mini is just my little toy for me and my girlfriend, and her eyes are pretty bad so a 20″ Cinema display is the only solution!

It’s good when I hook the PB up to the 20″ to play Halo!

  8. @ MIke dL B Simoni

I’m so glad there are people like you trying to show those Windows people what fools they are. Such certainty and wisdom is sure to convince them to join the Mac crowd immediatly. Bravo.

  9. Why does Apple even have a marketing division when they have people writing articles and comments like those found here?

It’s just a computer folks. Each kind excel in their own way. Remember there are many things the Windows people can do that we can’t. The way some of the fans blindly support Apple products, even with their many shortcomings, just because they provide a better experience than some other product, is, frankly, disturbing to me. What caused this type of devotion to a corporate entity and it’s products? Their quality, or the fact that a rival product is more popular and has fans of it’s own? Think about it. Are Macs really all that and more, or is it actually just fun to be able to bash the other group because they have problems we don’t?

  10. What the:
You’re right. There are plenty of things I can do on my Windows PC that I can’t do on my Mac. Vice vs.,my Mac Mini simply surpasses my Windows PC for creativity and productivity – 2 things MS needs to address.
At this point, without a doubt, the user experience is far better on my Mac.
However, I am sure the tides will turn IF Microsoft can execute on Longhorn – few think they will, but they are pouring every resource they have into it – and they have a lot of resources – as we all know.
I still think there is a need for both systems at this point, and that we can all live together – amicably. We should be able to at least.
As for your comments on Apples Marketing Dept., I don’t think they have one – or they’d be advertising the Mac Mini and Tiger in broad spectrum television, instead of in The Economist, and Newsweek.

  11. Hey Jamie,

you might well be missing something.

There are a lot of people out there having a lot of problems with the iMac. Try this:- http://www.macintouch.com/. In short, it’s unreliable – to put it mildly

And … if you buy a mini and a good LCD, in 2 or 3 years you can buy a new mini or display – seperately and when you like – or when you can afford it, without having to fork out another large sum for the whole computer.
The old mini will then be a great backup computer as it’s so small. You can use it to build a nice little multi-purpose computing tower, with more computing power and flexibility than any iMac – then or now.

Jamie Kelly has got it right perhaps.

  12. Why does Apple even have a marketing division when they have people writing articles and comments like those found here?

you know marketing is analysis of your target market, right? the purpose of marketing is to figure out what your market wants so you can go about giving it to them…
