Amnesty Widget Browser for Mac OS X Tiger (and Panther!) allows Widgets to run free of Dashboard

Amnesty Widget Browser is a utility that allows Dashboard widgets to live directly on your Desktop via a convenient icon in your system menu bar. Widgets loaded in Amnesty Widget Browser run completely independent of Apple’s Dashboard environment, maintain their own preferences and feature additional properties such as window level and opacity.

Amnesty Widget Browser allows users to sample third-party widgets outside of Dashboard. And for widget developers, Amnesty Widget Browser makes a great rapid testing environment (instead of loading widgets in Safari). Amnesty Widget Browser is slated for final release Q3 2005 but is available today as a public beta and it is currently available for Tiger (Mac OS X 10.4 or later) and Panther (Mac OS X 10.3.9).

  1. I installed this about two weeks ago and its pretty cool. Once the widget is free from dashboard you can adjust it’s transparency as you wish and it just floats on top of all your open windows.

I don’t have any feedback on security at this time but it is a very cool though..

  2. This is shareware once 1.0 goes final. I’d say only advantage to using this is if you wish to use widgets on 10.3 Panther. If you are running Tiger I’d say no need for it.

I have to disagree. Besides providing an opacity capability, it also
provides you a way to have your favorite widget visible at all times
    on your desktop.
