RUMOR: Apple to release Mac OS X 10.4.1 Tiger Update by mid to late-May

“The first stable builds of a maintenance and security update to Apple’s recently released Tiger operating system are being passed around the company’s Cupertino headquarters, AppleInsider has learned. Anonymous but reliable sources say that after a month in development, Mac OS X 10.4.1 Update, code-named “Atlanta,” is ready to be deployed for rigorous and wide-spread testing. Its objective will be to rectify any and all outstanding issues present in the shipping version of Mac OS X 10.4 “Tiger,” which went on sale over the weekend… recent builds of the system update have addressed nearly two dozen bugs located in Tiger, including sleep issues with iMacs, random crashes related to the new H.264 video codec, PDF printing problems with Safari and Bluetooth FTP. Problems with AddressBook, .Mac registration, iPhoto, Pages, iCal, iSync and iDVD have also been rectified, sources said,” AppleInsider reports. “Mac OS X 10.4.1, which currently weighs in at approximately 35MB, is slated for a mid to late-May release.”

  1. I hope the minor annoyance that is teh Dock freezing when magnified is fixed.

Also the issue I have with zip files; when Tiger extracts them and creates a folder for the files. The Finder does not update it’s contents until you create new folder and all of a sudden all the contents of the extracted folder is displayed.

  2. Not a rumor: it has been seeded already to ADC Select and Premier members.

    All’s good ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” /> An even better Tiger

  3. It doesn’t take a psychic or an “anonymous inside source” to know that Apple usually releases a 10.x.1 update about 1 month after an initial release. It is also no special insider info to know that it will probably fix any significant issues, not unlike what is listed at MacFixIt.com . Geeesh, guys, you can do better than this!!! I predict that Longhorn will have many functions copied from Mac OS X, but they will be more confusing, have less features, and more difficult to use. DUH!!!!

MDN: That’s really shameful. Taking idiot-based information from a 3rd-rate web site and posting it here as some sort of news. Geeesh!!! I don’t hate you; just pity you.

  4. “I’m noticing problems with SMB.”

I am not upgrading to Tiger because (MW) DAVE is not compatible. Thursby is promising a DAVE update some time in August.

In addition, it would be nice to have a Spotlight plugin ready for Entourage.

  5. Naraa: not a problem with SMB. The problem is with Keychain.

Delete and re-introduce the login information to SMB servers and you get rid of the Error -36 problem.

  6. Sure, it is great that we are getting a bug fix so fast. (Proves we got the “Hell, It’s Gotta be Good Enough to Ship Version.”

What concerns me is how limited .1 looks. Only 38MB and a couple dozen bug fixes?

I hope to God that is wrong. Tiger is awesome, but it is so buggy it’s not even funny. We need a 100+MB patch with hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of bug fixes.

  7. retro: concerning instability people are discovering that all the 3rd tweak party little applications modding Panther either do not work or make Tiger unstable.

All Tiger machine with a clean install or archive and restore on clean Panther installations are simply rock solid. We have a ballpark of 2400+ Macs, hence it is a good sample.

  8. retro cat: Actually, a ~30MB update proves the opposite of “Hell, It’s Gotta be Good Enough to Ship Version.”

It would be that in your sought case of an update of hundreds MB.

I also did a clean install. Tiger buggy? Oh my god: it solves issues I had with Panther and introduced none.

Double J: Cannot reproduce your problems.

Apple and other sites warned on doing the upgrade on modded Panther or with lots of applications modifying its behavior (that is not of the kind of drag&drop; install). They all suggested clean install and import your $HOME from a full backup.
Who did this has a rock solid Tiger and Panther is already last century product ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”raspberry” style=”border:0;” />

  9. I sure hope that Apple puts in the Auto Complete feature back into Address Book. Having to remember how a company is spelled when adding additional contacts is a huge issue. Cutting this functionality out was IMHO a huge step backward.

Well, not in my experience. I don’t use any haxies or whatnot and I did an achive and install yet my Tiger installation is rather buggy. I do agree with g$, though, the size of the update won’t determine its quality.

  11. And this is the reason I never buy new upgrades. You wait a month or so and the updates smooth out the problems.

I’l wait for a couple of weeks after this update to see how successful it is.

  12. effwerd: archive & install on a clean Panther installation? If you have mod installed that will not save you from instabilities.
An example, Mail by itself: rock solid. If archive & install and you had in Panther third party Mail scripts, then Mail is at least erratic and hit-&-miss behavior.

  13. I will wait for 10.4.2….then new macs will be out and I will be happy I waited….again.

Thank you all for buying the first version and shaking the bugs out.
