“On Friday, Apple Computer will pull back the curtain on the latest major upgrade to Mac OS X. In keeping with its penchant for playing major product launches close to its vest, few outsiders have seen a working version of Tiger, as Mac OS X 10.4 is known. Even most employees have had to wait,” Daniel Terdiman writes for Wired News. “But I knew someone with a copy and managed to finagle an unofficial demo. So after playing with Tiger for the better part of an evening, I can say it’s full of welcome surprises.”
“With several significant and innovative new features among the 200 additions Apple is touting, I think it’s a success. I’m relatively new to Macs — I switched only last fall after a lifetime on Windows machines — and I’m not an OS X power user. But I can already see how this upgrade is a definite step up from the previous version of OS X, known as Panther,” Terdiman writes. “…for me, Tiger is about Spotlight, the improved Mail and the great widgets I know the Mac community will come up with. Ultimately, I think Tiger is well worth its $129 sticker price…”

For those of us without $100 to drop on yet another OS upgrade, will the new versions of the standard apps be available for 10.3? (QT7, Mail 2, etc.)

QuickTime 7 maybe. The others (Mail 2, etc.) no – you’ll need Tiger for them.

QT7 prolly; Mail2 and the like, highly doubtfull. Apps that rely on new core techs like Spotlight won’t work back up the version trail.
QuickTime 7 is definitely going to be on Panther. Available on April 29.

Hmm… that’s too bad. I was hoping that Mail would be better overall (html handling, Exchange integration, etc.), not just the Spotlight features. If that’s all there is, though, I suppose it doesn’t matter.
Also, is there any truth to the rumor that iLife 05 isn’t coming free w/ the new Tiger systems?
Hmm.. That is very disappointing that you need a G5 or dual G4 to initiate a 3 way video chat in Tiger. Damn!

iLife does not come with Tiger.
I am hoping that Mail 2 has much improved rendering. I thought it used WebCore… It will not have better Exchange integration though. Maybe iCal will, at least I hope. I work where NOBODY has a Mac except me and getting set up with exchange is a pain and iCal still can’t get events. Mail won’t acknowledge meeting invitations. It’s a pain and I don’t like Entourage because it has an equal number of shortcomings.
Can’t MS make compatible software or open formats? No, huh? It’s good to be the King.

iLife has never come bundled with the new OS. Never. It is a separate suite of apps that cost 79$ and are worth every cent.
Want iLife 05 buy it or you’ll get it on a new Mac. Whoever started that rumor didn’t know what they were talking about in the first place.

Yeah I’m pretty bummed too that I can’t do video editing on my Mac Classic. I’m pretty disappointed. Apple should be sued for not being able to violate the laws of physics.
it is slightly disappointing that i can’t do 3 ways on my new powerbook in ichat under tiger. i did however get ilife 05 with the machine and qualified for the 10.4 upgrade since i ordered it on 4/12/05. so i’m only going to pay for shipping. 2 out of 3 isn’t bad, so just slightly disappointed.
you also need a fast internet connection for 3 way chat too.
I’m going to enjoy doing thee ways on my Mac under Tiger!!

So I looked on Apple’s site — at the PowerBooks — and I cannot find if any of them are “dual G4 Processors”.
So what laptop do I buy so I can INITIATE a 3-way video iChat?

You can initiate with a 1GHz G4 min. or a dual 800 MHz G4 or any G5
As I read it you can participate in a 3 way iChat, but cannot initiate the 3 way if you have a single G4. So initiate a chat with someone with a dual G4 or G5 and have them start the 3 way.
BTW, I used iSight for a chat with my wife while in Korea on business – worked beautifully. Doubt if she-who-must-be-obeyed would go for a 3 way . . .
I think it has to be emphasized that iLife (the application suite) and Tiger (the operating system) are not bundled together, nor were they meant to be. But look at it this way. According to the tech specs on the new Power Mac G5, these new machines (the hardware) come with Tiger installed, and iLife as one of the applications included in the Mac.
Does anybody have new benchmarks on the release version?
Hey, I’ve just realised that Spotlight will be great for academic referencing. Say you put a quote in your document from Gunn and Davis (1998). Spotlight could find the quote in PDFs of the technical papers you;ve downloaded (from Science Direct, for example) and bring up the publishing data needed for a reference, which could then be added to your paper. However, it doesn’t excuse students from reading the papers in the first place!
