Windows tech writer Paul Thurrott is blogging about what he’s seeing at the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) 2005 over on the Windows IT Pro website
“In the cold light of morning, I’m reflecting a bit on Longhorn 5048. My thoughts are not positive, not positive at all. This is a painful build to have to deal with after a year of waiting, a step back in some ways. I hope Microsoft has surprises up their sleeves. This has the makings of a train wreck. I’ll have more on that later,” Thurrott writes in his “WinHEC 2005: Day Two Blog” for Windows IT Pro.

What are you talking about. Longhorn looks nothing like XP. The task bar is GRAY!! Woo! Innovation!
Having seen the new longhorn shots I agree with Thurott, it is totally uninspiring, you would expect that this many years down the track they would have something a lot better than we’re seeing today. Quite frankly it’s ugly!
So how come no-one has picked up on Thurrott’s comment at 5:50pm in his Day Two Blog – “This one’s bizarre, but we heard at lunch today that Apple is unhappy with the PowerPC production at IBM and will be switching to Intel-compatible cheaps this very year. Yeah, seriously.”

I wonder if Paul has heard this wrong, and AMD are simply going to make G5s for Apple as IBM can’t keep up with demand. AMD know how to use HyperTransport, and the Opteron uses the same SOI manufacturing techniques as the G5. IBM and AMD are supposed to have an agreement to share knowledge, but I suspect if there was money in it for them, we may suddenly see a lot more development.
