Amazon jumps the gun, lists Dual 2.7GHz Apple Power Mac G5 for sale

Amazon.com looks to have jumped the gun by posting a listing for a Dual 2.7GHz Power Mac G5 complete with a “NEW” graphic. Clicking to Amazon’s “See more technical details” link shows little more than the message “Not yet released.”

Amazon’s description: Apple Power Mac G5 Desktop M9749LL/A (Dual 2.7 GHz PowerPC G5, 512 MB RAM, 250 GB Hard Drive, 16x Dual Layer SuperDrive) – Pre-order price is US$2,994.99.

Amazon lists fetaures for the unit:
• Mac OS X10.4, code named Tiger
• Dual 2.7 GHz PowerPC G5 processors
• 512 MB of DDR SDRAM
• 250 GB hard drive
• 16x Dual Layer SuperDrive (CD/DVD+RW)

Earlier this month, Think Secret reported that Power Mac G5 would soon be available in three models, Dual 2.0GHz, Dual 2.3GHz, and Dual 2.7GHz (the mythical 3GHz mark is still unattainable, it would seem).

  1. About Amazon’s early-released info: Oops.

OnlyMacs, we (apparently) won’t be seeing a dual-3Ghz until sometime next year. <sigh> Hopefully, by then the new Blu-ray/HdDVD hybrid spec will be hammered out and the new Powermacs will also come with the new disc drives so people can record their own HiDef content. We’ll just have to wait and see.

  2. Why so excited?? I wouldn’t think this would be a very good time to buy a Powermac. These specs are hardly a revision just a nominal bump. Wait untill the dual-core chips, pci- express and blu- ray are avaialable… now that is something to get excited about. This revision is dissapointing.

  3. “It is what it is– if it isn’t what you want, then wait. But geez– the complaining is so overdone already,” he complains. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”cheese” style=”border:0;” />

  4. Excited b/c I should be able to buy a completely and totally usable G5 dual 2.0 for $300 to $500 cheaper when the new models ship. If I were buying the newest generation, I would be disappointed, but the price cut (again, hoping) will allow me to get a tower as opposed to just getting an iMac.

  5. Way cool! I have all my “new toy points” saved up with the wife and will be venturing back into desktop land when these are released. Man, I can’t wait. The world has been seeming to move slower and slower on my 667 Tibook as all my relatives decide to switch and get faster Macs than mine. Well, it seems that the Long Wait is almost over.

  6. What a bunch of crybabies. (2) 2.7 gHz CPUs running Tiger will be way more than enough. Just what are you wanting to do with all of that clock speed other than crow about it?

  7. People will bitch about anything. I’ll wait until Apple actually announces the machines with ALL of the specs. Speed isn’t everything to everybody, this isn’t 1995. I do high-end Photoshop work everyday on a G4 533DP with no problem.

  8. This makes me laugh that people are bitching about the top end PM G5 “only” increasing 700MHz over the past 2 years. Last time I checked, the top end P4 has only increased 740MHz over the past 2 years too (from 3.06GHz to 3.8GHz).

It’s not just IBM, Intel and AMD have both hit the wall too people!!! And if you don’t like what Apple currently offers, then go buy a 3.8GHz P4 Dell and STFU!!!

  9. Honestly, once you get up past 2ghz, there doesn’t seem to be much difference. I had a dual 1.8 and now I have a dual 2.5 and both of them were lightning fast. Actually I think adding more RAM makes a bigger difference in performance than processor speed at this point.

Stan, you can have your Opteron. I used to have one at work and that thing was slow as molasses. I was excited to check it out because the IT dept. talked it up so much saying it was the fastest machine they’d ever seen. My dual 1.8ghz G5 smoked it in every task, plus Windows made it crash at least once a day. No thanks.

  10. I guess this just about puts the nail in the coffin on the “dual dual-core G5 powermacs” that various rumor sites have been talking about.

(that would be 2 cpus that each have two processor cores on them for a total of ‘4’ G5s)

  11. And Apple Powermac sales will continue to drop….

What ever happened to Moore´s Law – processor speeds getting faster, etc.?

I hate to admit it, but my $1,000 Medion 3.4 GHz P4 is faster than my dual 2.5 Mac when it comes to working with Photoshop and AfterEffects and such. Plus everything else seems snappier on the PC. Maybe when Tiger comes out it will improve, but I have not seen anyone from Apple boasting of improved speeds with Tiger.
Someone told me the problem with the slowdown is the graphics that Apple is using. Looks good, but slower to implement. Could be…

  12. Guys, it’s a speed bump, better to get one than none. Yes, two dual core chips would have been nice. A $500 price cut would be nice. I’m sure if it was doable, Apple would have done it. This is probably an interim step until they can make a big change later this fall. Be happy, see it as the excuse you needed to get a new one or a price break on the existing model.

Easy for me to say, I have a dual 2.5 on my (wife’s) desk at home and a shiny new 1.67 Powerbook to surf with. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”tongue rolleye” style=”border:0;” /> Both are plenty zippy, can’t wait to see the speed bump Tiger gives on the G5!

MDN Magic Word – ever – can Apple ever bring out hardware that people won’t bitch about
