After updating to Mac OS X 10.3.9, some systems may have issues with Java applications and Java-enabled websites when using Safari. Safari may unexpectedly quit, and standalone Java applications may unexpectedly quit or not launch.
You can perform a simple test to verify whether your computer is experiencing this issue. If it is, you will need to reinstall one or two software updates to resolve the issue.
Verifying the issue:
1. Go to the Utilities folder inside your Applications folder.
2. Open Terminal.
3. Type: java -version
4. Press Return.
If this issue affects your computer, you will get the the message, “Segmentation fault” (if you don’t see this, your computer is not affected by this issue). To resolve the issue, reinstall one or both of the following software updates.
Java 1.4.2 Update 2
Security Update 2005-002

No problems on any of my 3 Macs running 10.3.9 after running this check…
apple posted a new security update
No problems with my 3 Macs at home or the 3 Macs I use here at work.
My iMac G5 was affected, but my TiPB wasn’t affected.
Curiously, the iMac G5 now won’t run some things from their menus eg. Software Update and More info (although, they can be run directly if you find the apps). They’re greyed out on the “About this Mac” window.
Also, if I go to applescript’s script editor and try this:
tell application “system preferences”
activate
end tell
it hangs script editor. Same with NetInfo Manager. But if I try a different app eg. TextEdit, it’ll work fine (this is certainly priviliges or permissions related for sure, and despite doing a fix permissions, it still doesn’t work.) I’ve installed the 2005-02 security update, and the 10.3.9 combo update.
Will see if the latest security update fixes this.
Who is Appe?
Appe? They’re a company with one “L” of an idea about how to make an operating system safe and secure.
Latest security didn’t fix it.
Must be something else.
I made a non-Terminal version of the java version command available here: http://capmac.org/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?p=6270#6270
Not affected by this problem here. For me, Safari seems better after the recent update: faster, and fewer pop up/under ads.
I have problems with text fields that are black on some web pages in Safari.
and drop menus in finder and most apps don’t work as they used to 🙁
MLB gamecast broken by 10.3.9 update. Minor headache. Re-installing 2 previous security updates did not work. 12in PB 867Mhz. This is the first time I’ve been bitten by the Panther in all updates. Those big cats are not pets, despite what everyone says.
Bite the bullet you guys. Reformat and reinstall.
Does anybody know how to turn off animated GIFs in Safari? And how about Firefox? How do you turn off ANYTHING??? (Plug-ins and animated GIFs)

I re-installed the security update and I’m back up and running.
Had the same problem with MLB gamecast. Tried “the solution” but it did not work, first time ive been affected by any update since updating to X.
Will i have to wait for Tiger to correct this “glitch”
I was advised by my Mac Guru to also re-install Flash and Shockwave.
Several problems with Safari, bookmarks messed up, mail doens´t run, one poor little mac totally messed up. Sorry, but this Update sucks.
Safari has really been sucking, lately, on my TiBook. It now takes about twenty bounces to launch Safari, and after opening a new page it hangs up for 4 or 5 seconds (beachball).
Anyone else notice these things?
