Apple to open retail store in Rochester, New York’s Eastview Mall this summer

“Apple Computer Inc. is to open its first Rochester-area store this summer at Eastview Mall,” Mary Chao reports for The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle. “[The] Apple Store will take over the 3,600-square-foot space occupied by B. Dalton Books, which is closing, said Dennis Wilmot, vice president and regional director of leasing at Wilmorite Property Management, which operates the mall.”

Chao reports, “Wilmot said that Apple, with stores in Buffalo and Syracuse, has been eyeing the Rochester area. ‘As these higher-tier retailers saturate major markets, they are moving into secondary markets.’ Wilmorite has been negotiating with Apple Computer for two years. But because the mall is 98 percent occupied, finding the right space took some time, Wilmot said. The first Apple store opened in 2001, and there are now 103 across the country… Apple’s entry into the Rochester retail scene comes a year after Gateway Inc. closed all 188 U.S. stores, including one in Henrietta. Those stores also were dedicated to sales of a single brand of computer.”

  1. That’s great news! We in Syracuse will have closer access to a full size store rather than travelling to Buffalo or Albany. The Apple store in Syracuse is of the mini variety and does not have the same range of products or accessories as the full size store. Much worse is the mini-format store does not have any of the technology demonstrations that the full size store can support.

We may not have a full size Apple store but at least we’re ahead where it counts – in the Great Snow Race. When it comes to snow, all we can say to Mother Nature is “Bring it on!” See http://www.goldensnowball.com/ for snowfall details.

  2. All I want is an Apple store here in Columbia, SC. They need some technology education here in this city. These folks live and die by Microsoft. They cannot wrap their brains around an alternative. Putting a store in their face would definitely help. But, I guess since the Mac mini is going to be sold in Best Buys, that may be the closest we come to getting an Apple store.

  3. It’s about time, there are a ton of colleges in that area, not to mention RIT which alone has 15,000 students.

Plenty of people who love Macs in that school considering there are a ton of art/crafts/design/photo peeps there.
