“Apple’s interest in satellite HD content delivery has become more than obvious. Just a note to Phil Schiller and company: your (potential) competitors are taking notice! Just because Apple rebuffed Sirius is by no means an indication that Apple isn’t interested in satellite content delivery. Apple just doesn’t want to piggback on someone else’s network — they’re interested in building their own on existing satellites and potentially launching more than one of their own in the next few years as well,” MOSR reports.
“This ‘HDVN’ will not just be through satellite however. The same service will be available over the Internet and as a “drop in, plug in, tune in” service at its retail stores,” MOSR reports. “The company has long struggled with what form that hub device should take — and has settled on a system that emphasizes being a source for low-cost (or free) High Definition content that just isn’t readily available from Digital Cable or traditional Satellite TV systems. The best of the Internet and traditional HDTV brought together plus that little something extra – Apple style.”

Yeah. Btw, a Mac Genius at the Costa Mesa Apple store told me that FCP 5 is coming out and it supports multiple FW inputs. He said we’ll be able to do live switching between four or more cameras. I wonder if this new FCP 5 will be part of a broadcast studio for this HDTV network?

I think the Mac rumour community has its head in the clouds if people believe that Apple will put satellites in space to stream HD video into their HomePods or whatever. Ever since the cheap Mac (Mac Mini), and the flash memory iPod (iPod Shuffle) were announced the rumour press has had nothing exciting to talk about other than OS X 10.4 seeds so now they are making up this Apple video bull.
Do not hold your breath for the Apple satellite network. Mac OS Rumors is making this up.

Apple doesn’t need to put up its own satellites – they just rent bandwidth from the many systems that are up there already – and going up daily.

c´mon people, in recent years macosrumors has 0,zero,zilch credibility. Just read through the other crap they put on their website. I stopped going there years ago.
You put together macosrumors plus mdn reporting/legitimizing it and you know it is worthless crap to increase traffic to their respective sites.

If you haven’t read the Neo series, do. It makes total sense. The MacOSRumors site is just summarizing Neo. It doesn’t mean that Apple is going to do it, but I’d be surprised if they didn’t.
Macaday is right, they don’t need to have their own satellites, just buy bandwidth. The key to this whole thing is deployment of Wimax and H.264. Correctly done (and who would bet against Apple) this will drive Mac sales is a big way.

The April Wired Magazine has an article called “Discs Are So Dead.” In it they talk about how they think eventually we will download content off the internet. They have a quote from an Apple spokesperson saying that Apple has the opportunity but hasn’t made an anouncement yet. I think something with video content is coming from Apple.

That probably means FCP 5 will be able to capture multiple streams, which Avid has been able to do for some time now.
As for live switching, I don’t think so. As a live event video director, I would NEVER take a software live switching system over a hardware based switch system. I’ve seen too many Video Toasters crash to risk my show to that.

Uh, this story might be true. Maybe not entirely the way Mac OS Rumors reports it though. DirecTV has been advertising heavily now regarding its future launch of HD capable satellites that can provide 1500 channels of HD content. I’m assuming this is the regular set of 200-300 channels plus all the local channels across the US combined.
DirecTV has been a big proponent of TiVo and I think they will be sticking with that platform for some time to come. Now, I’m not sure if DirecWay is also part of the DirecTV empire or not, but that is a service that offers high speed internet via satellite.
If Apple is truly interested in dominating HD delivery content as well as other data services, I believe DirecTV is the company it will partner up with. I’d start buying stock in Apple and DirecTV ASAP.
On another note, a lot of services nowadays (<- that is not a word, I know) require the use of phone service. With all the price gouging from the telcos, no wonder cell phones are becoming so popular. I’m willing to bet that Apple has some master strategy regarding how telecommunications will be relevant in their future. Although the iPod phone hasn’t materialized yet, this may be a segway for Apple into the telco arena. If Apple becomes friendly with a satellite company… or even if it buys one, there are infinite possibilities for commercial success.
I seem to recall John Scully lobbying back in the 90s against HD, or keeping a subset frequencies just for data/content.
Anyone else recall this?
