  1. Notice that in the “story” above links are all to click.linksynergy.com – not apple.
So MDN passes this off as news, but gets a “bonus point and/or commission” when you click on it or buy the prodcut.

Could you imagine the NY Times or LA Times taking a commission for every link they put in their news stories?

This is not news, this is ad scam against MDN readers.
    Journalistic integrity???
Keep the news and ads separate MDN!

Watch MDN take my message down.

  2. Come on, do you really expect unbiased journalism from MDN? I don’t. It’s an Apple fan site that preaches to the choir and gleefully bashes Apple’s competitors. Fine with me. I doubt it’s ever pretended to be anything more than that.

  3. Aside from this not being “news”, these deals are horrible. Who would fall for this? A G4 1.33 PB w/ 256mb for the same price as a G4 1.5 w/ 512? Riiight.

  4. MDN is going downhill fast…

Not only am I getting these dumb pop-under ads (not once every 24 hours, but every other time I visit the site), but now MDN is tracking (or allowing their ad server to track) our clicks to the Apple Store.

This is crappy treatment of MDN’s surfers, and personally, I am getting really close to erasing MDN from my bookmarks list, and getting my Mac news from somewhere else.

MW: “ball”, as in, let’s see if MDN has the balls to leave this comment up and respond to my points.

  5. Winston this is not news or journalism – it is a ploy to get more money from its readers.

These type deals are on Apple all the time – its not news, MDN is disguising an ad as news.

The MDN boyz and girlz are getting greedy or going under fast to be this desparate. (I imagine more and more people are buying their apple stuff at the apple store so any ads to 2nd party apple resellers aren´t working as good anymore.)

  6. Ah a slow news day. I see this ad as a service to inform the users of the deals Apple has. Actually the “Sales” section of the Apple Store “Deals” department has been historically bare. It has only recently been listing previous models.

I agree with comments above that these deals are pretty poor considering that once you upgrade an older PB’s memory, and possibly software, you might as well paid for new one.

    Try the refurbished section.

If you guys and gals don’t like MDN, it’s ok to say so. MDN has more updates per day than the other entertainment-orientated Mac “news” sites, so if they throw something like this out there on a slow news day, I don’t blame them. I followed the link and browsed around for a while and so did you.

  7. Why does the iPod minis say ‘Original price: $249.00’? Shouldn’t the original price be $199.00? Since they include FireWire, I’m guessing their old stock. But that’s still a win win, yes?

  8. I don’t see how you can bash them for this. They aren’t pretending its a world altering story. And the disclaimer tells you they are getting paid for the reference, which by the way, lots of websites do. If you click a link to any retailer the odds are pretty high that your path is being tracked to give money back to the site that originated your purchase. If you don’t like that, don’t do business online but you can’t flame MDN for it.

My only complaint is to Apple. the price on that powerbook is ludicrous. $200 (or $100 if you’re elligible for a student discount) is very very worth the faster processor, bigger HD, and faster superdrive of the newer revision. Plus the ram can’t be upgraded on the old model before it ships. Sure it has an empty ram slot but with the 512 starting point on the new model its so cheap to go up to 768 you are kinda dumb if you dont. the price difference is now $275 and the performance difference is enormous. you could bump the old model up to 768 and close the performace gap but assuming you’re getting crucial memory that adds $94 and the price difference is now $181. No matter what you want or how you do the math it makes no economical sense.

  9. Winston is the only one with the correct take on this. I mean, lighten up people, if you are reading MDN you are an Apple fan plain and simple. While these promo items are obviously old stock, so what? It is news whenever Apple discounts anythng…besides we all read the story right? Probably looking for a deal on something? If you don’t like the product and price don’t buy. And if you don’t like MDN posting these types of ad-articles then be a little more choosy about which articles you read and leave the discounts to those of us that may be interested.
    Keep-em coming MDN!

  10. I have been waiting for “news” of a deal on an iPod photo. I read the news. Then I went directly to the Apple Store and purchased the 40gb iPod Photo for $379 plus tax. Shipping was free and it includes the firewire cable that is not provided with the current 30 & 60gb ipods. Yeah! Thanks MDN.

  11. Although I disagree with lots of things MDN does (like the shameless poking fun at Glaser with the doctored photo). MDN was pretty clear in stating their interest in posting those items.

MDN really should rename the site “Mac Daily News Opinions” or “Mac Daily New Commentary”.
