Report: Apple to make 512MB RAM the minimum standard in all Macs by June

“By mid-year, Apple is likely to include a minimum of 512MB of RAM in each of the Macs it sells, double the amount of standard memory shipping in most of today’s models,” Kasper Jade reports for AppleInsider. “Sources say Apple intends to complete the move by mid-year, around the same time it begins shipping its next-generation operating system, Mac OS X 10.4 ‘Tiger.'”

Jade reports, “Although Tiger will not require 512MB of RAM, insiders say the boost in memory spec will assure consumers a smoother experience running both Tiger and Apple’s iLife ’05 digital lifestyle software suite. They added that the upgrade is ‘much needed.’ The boost would make Apple the first major PC manufacturer to include half a Gigabyte of memory in all of its CPU-based products.”

MacDailyNews Take: Good. We’re sick of having to tell people, “buy the extra RAM, you’ll want it” when we recommend Mac mini, iMac G5, iBook, etc.

  1. “You want all that shit, go buy a f*&%in’ Dell.”

This is perhaps the funniest, nonsensical comment i’ve seen on MDN. You’re telling someone to go buy a POS Dell to get the features that Apple should be providing their loyal customers? What next? “what, you want a DVD navigation system in your BMW? Go buy a KIA for that!”

The standard 512 MB (if not a rumor) is a start, but Apple needs to address some other issues as well.

    Two things are a must:

    1. a Midlevel corporate solution including a G5 (or 1.8+ GHZ G4) and a 17″ LCD monitor for under $1400.

    2. a G5 or dual-core G4 Powerbook STAT! With AMD releasing dual-core A64 mobile chips in the 2nd half of 2005, Apple needs to get some more power into the PB line soon. I already hate the fact that my $1000 A64 notebook can squash my $2000 PB in Photoshop rendering.

  2. Dual-core PowerBook G4 would be so damn expensive! And you would have to put in 2 GB of RAM to make it worth while. Be patient, and you’ll have a 64 bit PowerBook soon enough. Just get a PowerMac, and use it off an Airport Station.
