Apple Mac minis sell out in South African Apple centres

“Mac minis enjoyed a sell-out launch at three Apple centres in SA on Saturday, when the entire shipment of about 80 units was sold in three hours,” Paul Vecchiatto writes for IT Web. “The new Mac minis are Apple’s entry-level products, sold without a keyboard, mouse or monitor. All three of the Apple centres say their entire consignments were either sold outright or are largely spoken for. The centres have received back orders for a number of machines, although they are not sure when the next shipments will arrive.”

Vecchiatto writes, “Spurred by the news that the first three people to purchase a Mac mini would get a free keyboard, mouse and an LG LCD monitor and the next seven would get a free keyboard and mouse, potential customers started queuing during the early hours of Saturday morning. Project 3 co-owner Alan Goldburg says there were about 17 people in front of his premises on Saturday morning and the crowd grew substantially by opening time at 9am [and he said that] a number of people were attracted to the store through curiosity about the Mac mini, they bought some of the higher-spec and higher-priced G5 workstations instead.”

  1. Micheal, it doesn’t state how many were ordered. Given the current stateside shortage, they should be glad they got 80 of them.
I’m still waiting on the CompUSA here in Greenville, SC to get a display model in. I just bought a G5 but I still want to see what all the fuss is about.
I’m sure I’ll end up with a mini in the next year or so.

  2. Maybe I’m off base, but the $1,999 Crutchfield price on the 26-inch version of that Samsung LCDTV seems a bit high. In California, Good Guys is closing out the 32-inch version for about $2,299. A salesman implied that they would soon be replaced with a newer model. I’ve seen the 32-inch version, and it is a very nice widescreen TV with a lot of inputs. I’ve seen the 32-inch version on the Web for as low as about $2,099.

  3. Actually I have seen Mac mini’s in stock at a couple of stores in Akihabara. I think Apple has big hopes for the Japanese Market so they shift quite a bit of stock here. It all sells but sometimes not at the pace that is seen elsewhere. If they CAN get a product to be THE thing to have in Japan though it is HUGE. The Japanese traditionally are slower to change but when they do they change all at once and all together.

  4. Come on MDN….you are sounding pretty desperate. Talk about hyped up headlines. It’s only 80 friggin computers! I think you guys are drinking too much Jobs Juice. That may be a lot of units for Apple but for serious PC companies, it is really just a drop in the bucket. Let’s wait until we see some real sale figures before we break open the champagne and celebrating the death of the pee cee. Geez!

  5. Good points George, these guys carry the 26″ for $1400:

    and the 32″ for $2150:

I’ve heard that Apple display’s have Samsung mechanisms, but Apple doesn’t make a TV, making this the next best thing. I wonder if Samsung is refreshing the whole line or just the 32 model.

BTW, the tip to watch movie trailers using Universal Access’s zoon in rocks!

  6. yes, it is shocking that only 80 were sold
yes, they should have ordered more
    and yes, they did
but no, apple did not release more than 80

in fact they only released 10 (that is ONE ZERO) iPod shuffles for the whole of ZA (40 millio population)

the apple-za crowd (an apple IMC) try very hard to push more product here – if only apple-com will let them. we also wish that apple-com will get their demand forecasting right next time…

or is that just another pipe dream?

  7. Yo Verve

Just a quick observation, Dell doesn’t sell Mac minis.

80 isn’t alot of stock for a backwoods community, much less a whole county, but the point is, 80 or 80,000 they are flying off the shelves. The mini is a hit, much to the dismay of Mac naysayers everywhere.

Does anyone know if Apple Centres are the only authorized outlets oin the country? Or if other VAR or chain retailers sell them?

  8. Darknite, you clearly dont know what the situation is in South Africa with regards to technology. I suggest losing the profound Iggnorance and do some reasearch before posting dumb ass respones like you did, “80 isn’t alot of stock for a backwoods community”.
