Banc of America analyst estimates 900,000 Apple Mac mini units to be sold in 2005

“Analyst Keith Bachman of Banc of America Securities, in a research note published this morning, “mentions that the FY05 sales estimate for the company’s iPod Shuffle product has been raised from 4.4 million to 5 million units. Banc of America Securities expresses its optimism regarding the iPod Shuffle’s sales prospects in the global market,” newratings.com reports. “The demand for Apple Computer’s Mac Mini continues to be robust and the sales estimate for the product has been raised from 305,000 to 900,000 units, the analyst says.”

Full article here.

MacDailyNews Take: The estimate has already been raised from 305,000 to 900,000 units for 2005. It’s only February, so look for that estimate to be “adjusted” throughout the year. For the record, MacDailyNews currently estimates “over 1,000,000” Mac mini units will be sold in 2005. And we feel very comfortable with our estimate.

  1. “the sales estimate for the product has been raised from 305,000 to 900,000 units, the analyst says.”

The initial estimate was off by 200 percent? That’s some real impressive forecasting, Keith. Remind me not to ask you if it’s going to rain tomorrow.

  2. Never believe stock brokers. They are rarely right and never post their % of correct predictions.

I remember a long time ago my stock broker recommending Commodore Computer over Apple; saying Apple was going bust soon – that was in the mid 80s.
Commodore went bust right after that.

I dumped the stock broker and started doing my own research.

I bought Apple in 1998 around $13-$14 if I remember correctly.

  3. The guy is well off.

Apple should be able to clear 500,000 mac mini a quarter once production is ramped up and the supply chain is fully loaded for the whole quarter.

As for Shuffles – I wouldn’t be surprised if they shift 2M of those babies this quarter and sell 3-4 every quarter thereafter.

I’m looking for Apple to sell 5-6M ipods this quarter and 1-1.5M Macs.

Magic word is Ball, as in I’ve got a Magic Ball and no you can’t have it!

I think you meant crystal ball…

How that music used to make me smile.
And I knew if I had my chance
That I could make those people dance
And, maybe, they’d be happy for a while…

Magic word: house. “I can’t think of anything interesting to say about the word house.”

  6. Do you remember the predictions concerning iPod sales we had from the ‘anal’ysts before the last (Christmas) quarter?

They were way out – mostly far too low.

If this feeble-minded nitwit carries on like this though – i.e. trebling his previous forecast every few weeks, he’ll be predicting sales of thousands of billions by the end of the year.

(That’s no exaggeration – work it out!)

But seriously, isn’t it sad? This man gets payed for this codswallop.

And other folk have to work really hard for their money.

  7. The controling factor in the number of Mac mini’s sold is the number that can be manufactured per quarter. Apple is on record saying the capacity is 1/4 million per quarter. Saying they will sell a million this year is not a risky prediction.

  8. Apple may have contracted with the manufacturer to make 250K minis a quarter, but if they are experiencing a large demand, they will increase the quota. I don’t think the manufacturer is going to complain.

The question is whether they have already adjusted the quota. It took a while for Apple to start selling bucket loads of ipods, so it might take a while to ramp up mini demand and supply. I still think 900K is a small number. Apple easily sell that many iMacs and iBooks and both of those items are at least twice the price of a mini.

  9. My nephew got his iPod Shuffle a couple of weeks ago and loves it. My new Mac mini is in the Living Room connected to an EyeTV unit and an Apple DVI to Video Adapter.
The MDN magic word is “Green” , like Dell being “Green with Envy”.

  10. Sweet Mac brethren mine,

This whole thread together with the anal-ysts’ predictions is very similar to those many iPod prediction-threads last year.
The analysts’ predictions were usually totally wrong and we (the Mac brotherhood) were sometimes right but often partially wrong – we were seldom as mistaken as the analysts.
But all of us (Mac brethren and analysts) tended to underestimate the iPod sales.
So I’m going to jump over my own shadow and say:-

TWO AND A HALF MILLION MAC MINIS BY THE END OF THE YEAR!

  11. uhhhh…. when did “Bank of America” ….become “Banc of America” ??

Please ….no one tell me it was about the same time Rock n Roll became “Classic Rock”….. cuz I dont remember when that happened, either !

Magic word is “deep”…. as in Knee deep in the Hoopla !

  12. I think that boat loads of MacMini’s will be sold. Some of the new markets so far are auto and home automation. The iPod in the car thing has sparked interest for the Mac in the Car thing. Built-in speech recognition and the wireless options further make the MacMini the best choice for car integration. Size and easy mounting of the MacMini make it ideal as a perfectly small computer for controlling home appliances and home security. Home designers can use the MacMini as an invisible multimedia controller to go along with large fancy in wall entertainment systems. The MacMini is perfect for these new embedded computing environments. I’m curious to see if new hardware “hacks” will be introduced that utilize the mezzanine interface internally. Perhaps if Apple wanted to make current MacMini’s more graphically powerful, they could make a replacement mezzanine board that has additional graphics memory. Perhaps a 3d party combo bluetooth 2.0 module/ over the air HDTV tuner could be made so the MacMini can do double duty as a computer and HDTV tuner. I remember that when the Mezzanine slot was included on the first generation iMac, some innovative company used it to add a high end second graphics card to it. Perhaps this mezzanine slot is just as open.
