New York City students fall victim to ‘rash of vicious iPod muggings’

“City students have become victims of a rash of vicious iPod muggings and a spike in larcenies at schools. One South Brooklyn transit officer, who asked not to be identified, said his district has seen a near doubling of student iPod robberies on the subways in recent months,” David Andreatta and Murray Weiss report for The New York Post.

“Police said the white iPod headphones, which seem to be pumping tunes into the ears of every other youngster on the street these days, are alerting would-be thieves to the presence of the tiny but big-bucks music players,” Andreatta and Weiss report. “Police said that students interested in engraving their iPods or other valuable items could visit a transit district office and have them etched.”

MacDailyNews Take: iPod case makers should introduce a line of faux Dell DJ iPod cases. You know, like those fake labels that make a can of beer look like a can of soda.

  1. This reminds me of the times when people thought it was cool to be wearing their white headphones.

I always thought it was IDIOTIC for someone to advertise they had an iPod for the exact reason of getting mugged.

Besides the fact the headphones that come with the iPod are subpar at best.

  2. Now with other mp3 player companies making knockoffs of the white headphones, I would love to see the mugger’s face when he/she gets a crappy player instead of an iPod. Do they just trash it?

  3. Boeing, don’t worry your pretty little brain on it. MDN doesn’t avoid anything, and it will cover that story, in depth, with what is sure to be an interesting personal take on it.

What a pathetic answer. What grade you left school at?

Just cover the news without adding some of your short sighted comments.

Instead of putting irrelevant articles (mostly) on a so called pro-apple web site; care to stick to what is relevant to apple. No need to go back to school to understand these basics. Just use your huge brain for once.

  5. Ok,

I’m sorry everyone… I didn’t mean to offend by my inane, idiotic rantings. I lost my job last week and, well, I guess I was just lashing out.

    Once again, my sincere apologies.

  6. The m:robe is going to fail. That’s my prediction. It’s decent, but there are flaws. First of all, the 100 looks like a 1980s hand held led game, like submarine or something. The interface, based on their little flash demo is kinda hokey.

The 500 is gigantic, too big, and too complex. I don’t know why everyone thinks you have to salp a camera on something.

Gizmodo: “…The AP review of the m:robe 500i tears apart Olympus’s new flagship music player as “basically a shiny brick.” While that could be high praise depending on context, it echoes my feelings about the 500i ever since I had my hands on it at CES: too big, too expensive, and too little camera from a company known for high-class imaging. I stick by my m:robe 100 judgment, though—that’s one good looking little player….”

They like the 100, but I’ll wait until they try to use the “Red Retro.”

  7. I find it amusing that someone can hate something so much yet he participates in something that he hates so much! It’s just like saying you hate homosexuals but yet your best friend(s) and your brother are Gay! it doesn’t make sense.
