InterSystems Corporation today announced that its CACHÉ post-relational database is available for deployment on Mac OS X. The product was introduced at the HIMSS 2005 conference in Dallas, Texas.
The leading database provider in healthcare and number two embedded database worldwide, InterSystems develops and markets the CACHÉ post-relational database and the Ensemble universal integration platform.
The CACHÉ database delivers a rich feature set combined with highly automated system management. CACHÉ features a Unified Data Architecture that automatically makes data available as both objects and tables, eliminating the need to synchronize data definitions or map from one form to another. In addition to enabling extremely rapid SQL development and deployment, CACHÉ offers the advanced object technology preferred for deployment in the inherently object-oriented Web environment with a complete object model, including encapsulation, polymorphism, multiple inheritance, collections, and relationships.

You’d understand the impact of this announcement if you worked in healthcare. Nearly all major hospital laboratory and medical systems are running Cache. That’s worldwide. These are multi-million dollar systems. Intersystems would not have released Cache for Mac OS X if they didn’t believe that the platform was a viable business platform.

Sorta on topic question regarding Larry Ellison’s ties with Apple: does Oracle have a database solution that plays well with Macs? I don’t do anything with databases, but I do recall that Ellison was once on Apple’s board and that he’s considered ‘mercurial’, a nice way of saying ‘crazy as a bedbug but RICH’…
My hospital uses a nasty Command Line green screen and XP. I’d feel much happier (and I’m sure the nurses would too) if my hospital ran OS X.

Smithy, what applications are they running? Do you know who the vendor is? Are they laboratory/radiology apps, or are they business apps like scheduling, billing, managed care, etc.? Cache allows for building the “old school” roll & scroll screens as well as GUI screens. Many companies are updating their old style applications using Cache.

Oracle released their Oracle 10g database for MacOS X Server in December 2004. According to the blurb on the page, Oracle 10g is the first relational database designed for Grid Computing. You can download it from Oracle here.
