Report: Apple to begin work on second New York City retail store

“Sometime this year Apple Computer is expected to begin renovation and construction efforts on its second New York City-based retail store, set to touch down in central Manhattan,” Prince Mclean reports for AppleInsider. “After months of searching for a feasible location in pricey Midtown, the company has reportedly settled on a lease for a massive retail space in the lower-level concourse of the General Motors Building at 767 Fifth Avenue, between 58th and 59th Street.”

Mclean reports, “Although it’s very early in the development stages, sources say Apple will turn the 21,000-square-foot space into a retail store that will ‘rival anything seen so far’ from the company’s retail division.”

  1. It’s about time…I have friends in mid-town who are too chicken to come to SOHO.

Not to mention that Apple will add some much needed style to midtown’s INCREDIBLY BORING selection of stores.

  2. The store will probably have its front door on the
below ground level open plaza on 5th Avenue. This
will be a very expensive situation even though below
ground level stores have not done that well in
New York. Does Apple really need another store in
NY? Let’s remember that Tekserve on W 23rd St is
one of the finest Apple sales and repair stores in
the country. J&R and Comp USA also have good Mac sections.

Yes! Anyone that’s been in the SoHo store on a weekend can tell ya the answer to that one.

I went to the SOHO store while visiting NY in the summer of 2004. It was about 2 weeks after Apple had released the 4G iPod and the SOHO store was packed FULL of people.

I know EXACTLY what you’re talking about. Man, that place was wall-to-wall; during the WEEK, no less.

Manhattan would be a great location for a new Apple store.
