Apple’ Mac mini in high demand, faces backlog; Target.com now selling Mac mini

“Apple Computer’s new budget-priced computer doesn’t go on sale in its retail stores until tomorrow, but the company looks like it may already have a hit on its hands. Orders placed on the company’s Web site for the Mac mini may take three to four weeks to ship, the company warns. Other resellers such as MacConnection and MacMall are experiencing similar, although often shorter, backlogs,” Troy Wolverton reports for TheStreet.com.

“The initial response to both the Mac mini and the iPod shuffle, Apple’s cut-price digital music player, has been “incredible,” said Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris. But Kerris declined to give sales figures or to say whether demand for the devices has outstripped the company’s expectations,” Wolverton reports.

“One surprise reseller of the Mac mini is Target’s online store Target.com, which is offering both versions of the device. Analysts have speculated that Apple will broaden the distribution of the low-cost computer beyond its normal network of resellers,” Wolverton reports.

    Macintosh community declares VICTORY!!

I have to smile because with all the new support groups, forums, editorials, news pieces and websites going up it’s not like we HAD to win.

All we have to do is ACT like we won. It’s like VE Day around here. Or like watching the Berlin Wall falling. Sailors are kissing nurses in Time Square, Bill Gates has surrendered on the deck of a battleship. and there are parades down 5th Ave.

“What did you do in the Great OS Wars of the 90’s daddy?”

“I got my entire school district to switch from Dell to Apple….”

    “Wooooooooooooooooooooow….. were you a HERO?”

“We all did our part son, every one of us, and we never wavered. Even during the darkest days of Gil Amelio. The CEO of Apple who used a PC laptop.”

Really, it’s great. Scores of switchers are stumbling out of the Wintel UFO’s 20 years after their abduction, their eyes squinting at the the bright lights of OS X desktop while legions of Mac volunteers are there to greet them with a bottle of Pepsi (with yellow caps you get the SONGS) a new iPod Shuffle and a copy of Macworld.

Perception IS reality. And the perception is that Apple has won. Screw the statistics. We don’t need no STINKIN’ statistics! I don’t care if that gas station over there has a stinkin’ Dell. I have a MACINTOSH. And I am a human being.

    And I am somebody!!

And if you’ve ever noticed, revolutions NEVER happen slowly. The fall of the Soviet Union, the Berlin Wall. Heck the transition to CDs, or the LEAP to the iPod.

People THINK for a long time, slowly make up their minds, and BANG the next day an iMac. But this time the Shuffle and the MINI are the catalysts. The ice breakers. And it’s happening RIGHT now. Bells are ringing all over the world.

    I can’t stop smiling.

And MDN is right. Whenever you have time, go over to to the Apple Support Forums. Welcome the Switchers. Be patient with them, go the extra mile.

Understand that this is HARD for them, they’ve been through HELL.

  2. I hate to burst your bubble but will anyone still be interested in switching when Apple finally gets some stock to sell in 3 months?

The demand is now, the supply does not exist.

  3. “Forbes reports Office Depot on Thursday advertised a Compaq PC with monitor for $300, after rebates. Dell on Thursday advertised a PC with a 15-inch flat-panel monitor for $349, after rebates.”

“Apple Senior Vice President Phil Schiller cautions consumers not to think of the Mini as anything but a small, second computer or first Mac.”

    Excuses already Phil?

The 1.2GHz G4 processor had an introduction date of
    June 23, 2003.

I wish there was a way to count how many Windows users are part of this mass fanatic convergance to buy one of these little repackaged minis. Anyone got numbers?

Hmmm. Interesing point Holiday. You know, everyone always bings Dell for just repackaging other parts to make a computer and push it out the door over there at Dell. Isn’t this essentially what Apple has done with the mini. They take 1 1.2 year old parts they thought they could never sell, repackage them, polish them up and sell them? Everyone goes nuts over this. Am I wrong?

The Mac Mini isn’t a HARDWARE product, it’s an incredible OS and software package with a capable computer thrown in to the deal.

And OS X was created by Apple. We all KNOW this… right?

(I’m amazed that they still don’t get it)

  6. With reference to HP putting out a $499. Just saw a Dell ad for the same price, throwing in a flat panel free upgrade and something else. Wonder what needs to be added to get it fit for use. Clearly a response from Dell against the mini.

  7. Hmmm, I realized after reading loki’s post that the mini does not have audio in. I guess a USB interface is needed then if you really want to get into garageband. All the other Macs have a built in microphone, no? Well, I guess since it is aimed at switchers they will be used to not having things like this.
