Apple CEO Steve Jobs: Mac OS X ‘Tiger’ will ship ‘long before Longhorn’

“Not to miss the search beat reverberating throughout the PC market, Apple Computer chief Steve Jobs touted the company’s innovations in desktop search coming with its next Mac OS X upgrade. Specifically, Jobs said Apple has a superior vantage point to build in technology for finding files buried on the operating system, compared with third-party application makers launching products for the same purpose. Google, for example, has said it plans to create a desktop search tool for Macs,” Stefanie Olsen reports for CNET News.

“‘When you build it into the operating system you can do things that you can’t when it’s sitting off to the side,’ Jobs said Tuesday during his keynote speech at the annual MacWorld Expo in San Francisco,” Olsen reports. “Last June, Apple highlighted new search technology called Spotlight that it said would feature in an upcoming version of its operating system, Tiger. In November, the company gave greater detail about how the technology works in documents posted to its Web site.”

Olsen reports, “Jobs previewed the feature during his speech Tuesday, and said the update is on track to be delivered in the first half of 2005. ‘And that is going to be long before Longhorn,’ Jobs said, in an apparent dig at rival Microsoft’s much-heralded search technology for the operating system. Longhorn is slated to ship in the second half of 2006.”

MacDailyNews Take: Tiger? Whoa, wait a minute! What about Mac OS X Jaguar or Panther? We’ve been using those advanced operating systems for years already which adds up to even longer than “long before Longhorn.” Nevermind Tiger, do you think Longhorn even has a chance to be superior to Mac OS X 10.1 (“Puma”), which was released in September 2001?

  1. Yes, I think Longhorn has a chance to be superior to OS X 10.1. It will have more features and work better with existing printers than 10.1 did when it came out.

I don’t think (I KNOW) that Longhorn will pale in comparison to whatever Apple is shipping as an OS by the 2nd half of ’06.

  2. zupchuck,
You are probably absolutely correct on your take on where Longhorn stands in comparison to OS X. But let’s not forget that Microsoft, in order to have Longhorn ready by the end of 2006, will probably end up cutting everything except for the Ctrl-Alt-Del function.

  3. “…will probably end up cutting everything except for the Ctrl-Alt-Del function.”

    So True

new filing system cut out, etc. It’ll just be XP with higher system requirements for the bloat-ware needs, and some appearance changes.

  4. Copland..er, I mean Longhorn, will be Microsoft’s final nail. They are setting themselves to fail miserably…. and won’t it be wonderful.

Now’s the time for Apple to start showing OS X ads. Show it in action and people will check it out. Something like “Why wait for tomorrow when you can have it TODAY?”

  5. ok the MDN take is just dumb. Yes we know that Mac OS X is far superior to Windows… but 10.1 couldn’t play DVDs or burn CDs from the desktop, so shut up. That aside, Tiger is the next massive barnstorming to come from Apple, and it will get all the OS press worth reading for easily 12 months before the cow ships from Redmond. moo

  6. Poor Bill needs a lesson in sarcasm. Even MDN knows that XP is superior to the Panther in one way: you can resize a window from any place (top, bottom, left, or right) rather than just the lower right corner.

    I can’t think of any others, can someone please help me? ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  7. Ok, that first post of mine was very sarcastic, if anyone missed it (mike)

Today was the Mac Expo. Why would they release Longhorn there?

And i said good products were released today, hammering home that longhorn is not a good product. ohwell..

  8. To build quility products quickly you need many developers. Microsoft can’t afford to throw more money at developing ideas and software, so we wait – where Apple uses the collective knowledge and skill of open source coders.

Maybe Microsoft should become open source also? But then why would we use it then… no one would continue to develop OS9, would they?

  9. MDN seems to be forgetting MS’s new “Free” antivirus apps that will come bundled with XP(which they will no doubt charge for in the not too distant future). MS is the greatest company in the world at INNOVATING new ways to get subscription based revenue from its users.

  10. Well, I cant speak for others, but being a devout Mac Head since OS 7.1, and following the Mac OS all the way to 9.x …. I found Puma to be the most exasperating OS I have ever used…

But, it was from Apple… so I kept at it … trying to make it work, the way I wanted….

I ended up reformatting my hard drive and re-installling OS 9.x…

I was so put off by Puma… I didnt even want to give Jaguar a chance… so I waited for Panther…

From the first day I installed Panther… I was hooked !!

Finally, an OS I could love !!

And now…. June cant come soon enough…. If I could order Tiger today… I would !!

So… even IF The Evil Empire could make ShortHorn as good as Puma… (very doubtful) ..thats not saying much !

I see it as just another piece of bloatware, full of security holes .. no different from what they have always made up in Redmond … business as usual !!

  11. Tiger is one OS I will have to shed cash to buy rather than acquire it via hardware. Dang better work too. Now, can I skip 10.3.7 and go from 10.3.6 to 10.3.8 directly? If you’re in the know, please comment.
