RUMOR: New speed-bumped Apple PowerBooks coming tomorrow

New speed-bumped PowerBooks are rumored to be scheduled to appear during Apple CEO Steve Jobs’ Macworld Expo keynote presentation.

At the high-end, the new PowerBooks will top out at 1.67GHz, up from 1.5GHz, according to ThinkSecret. Other chances include 4200RPM hard drives being replaced with 5400-rpm models with larger capacities. “The video card at the high-end will remain ATI’s Radeon 9700, but it will be given a boost from 64MB of memory to 128MB. The PowerBook SuperDrive will also gain official support for DVD+R media, along with the DVD-R discs that have always worked,’ ThinkSecret reports. “At the low-end, the 12-inch PowerBook [currently offering a 1.33GHz G4] will be upgraded to 1.5GHz.”

  1. Hmmm…. I’ll still hold out with my 550MHz TiBook until the G5s show up.

    magic word: disappointment

By the way, I linked to that story in a comment on another thread a couple of hours ago.

  2. Well to be honest, I think we shouldn’t completely downplay this as a lack of progress. While it’s not the highest quality announcement, numbers are constantly jumping among Intel and AMD. Apple is an exception because relatively few computers are available, so whenever they get faster, they attract a lot of attention. When a PC gets faster, people don’t notice because it’s happening all the time.

In my opinion, I’d prefer continuous upgrades rather than HUGE announcements of 1 GHz boosts. So this is not a bad thing in the end. Keep up the progress Apple!

  3. notatotalsucker: “Now who’s got a pirate flag waving in the breeze?”

well… steve jobs used to have such a flag once… maybe they can borrow that one… that is… if he doesn’t use it himself right now ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />

  4. The problem with the G5 Powerbook is that the G5 will have to be choked back so far to be SLOWER than the G4. Would you want a 1.4Ghz G5 or a 1.67 GHz G4 with better battery life/heat ? I’d go for the G4, sorry guys and gals.

  5. Shouldnt Freescale have been able to up the FSB of these things by now? thats what keeps these things from being truelly fast. Such a huge bottleneck, whats up, the GPU has more thourghput than the CPU?

  6. Why does Apple love to cripple our hardware so? One button, no DVD+R support, limited resolution on external monitors, mirroring only for consumer models, can’t disable the Dock (ok that was software), where will it end?

I think I might switch to XP for some flexibility. Ha ha, ok flame away, I didn’t REALLY mean it.
