If only you had a time machine: Apple Computer – up 193.5 percent – was the superstar stock of 2004

“The stock market looks set to chalk up respectable, but not mind-blowing gains for 2004. Investors in index funds should be satisfied, but maybe just a little bit envious of investors in these 10 companies, which range from high-profile techs (wish you had a bite of that Apple?) to insurers and steelmakers,” CNN/Money writes about “2004’s Stock Superstars.” The number one S&P 500 stock with the biggest year-to-date gain as of Monday:

Apple: 193.5 percent — Why have shares of Apple nearly tripled this year? One word: iPod. Sales of Apple’s popular digital music player surged in 2004, helping Apple to blow away analysts’ earnings estimates for the past three quarters. It looks like Apple is no longer just a company for faithful Mac users.

  1. Well I sold my house, and put the entire 390,000 into Apple.

I’m buying a small island, black market Russian nuclear submarines, hiring a bunch of mercenaries, inviting all the smartest people in the world to come live with me, and calling it Thelonius Land. No Windows allowed.

  2. Consider me the first person to join your empire of Thelonius Land!!! We things work like are supposed to.. ALL THE TIME! *this better mean that our dancers take their tops off on demand as well*

  3. So no gates, either, hey, Thel? ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”tongue wink” style=”border:0;” />

Can I be your secretary of state? I can speak some Russian…

(This meesage was brought to you by the word “products”)

  4. Ha! Some of us didn’t need a time machine! I’m glad I put my entire portfolio into AAPL in 2003. Of course I recently divested some, but most is riding high – and I expect another bump in the new year, with the fat Q4 numbers posted in a few weeks (today is the final day for Q1 btw) as well as the Macworld excitement.

  5. I bought most of my AAPL under $14 ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />
    AAPL is still a bargain because AAPL should be over $150 ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />
Especially now when IBM sold its crappy PC business and crowned the Apple its PC producer.
Lets see if the HP also sells the PC business and concentrates to printers ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

Lets see if the HP also sells the PC business and concentrates to printers

You conveniently forget that HP also sells servers. I think HP, IBM, and even eventually Dell will be out of the PC business as such, and will be more of “PC services” companies. Instead of selling the hardware which will be available from cheap sources in China and India, they will try to help people out with their (rotten) products. Because they will be supporting Windows, people will need a lot of help. You can’t lose in that situation!

Because many people buying Windows boxes will be buying low-quality parts all patched together, they will need additional services and help that Apple customers won’t need as much. Apple products will end up being “more expensive” but also more reliable, but will by most people only be seen as “more expensive.” Then again that sounds a little too close to the mark now… hmmm
