Apple Computer continues to lead all computer brands in website visits

“Apple Computer Inc. remains the category leader in attracting unique visitors to its web site, despite a dramatic surge in visits to the Dell Inc. site in the last month, according to Nielsen/NetRatings. Apple and Dell also lead in the amount of time visitors spend on the sites of computer brands,” InternetRetailer.com reports. “In the week ending Dec. 12, compared with a month earlier, the number of unique visitors to Apple’s site declined from 4.9 million to 4.6 million. Meanwhile, Dell climbed from 2.7 million unique visitors in November to 4.1 million in the most recent period. Hewlett Packard Co. held down third place in both reports, moving from 2 million unique visitors in the earlier study to 2.1 million in the most recent research.”

“Besides leading in number of unique visitors, Apple and Dell placed first and second in the amount of time visitors spend on their sites. Apple visitors stayed for an average of 18 minutes, 47 seconds, while Dell visitors averaged 11 minutes, 53 seconds,” InternetRetailer.com reports.

  1. It could be argued that a longer time spent on the website could be because it’s hard tol navigate. But I’ve been to Dell’s website, and I think that number only proves Apple’s popularity is much greater than might be expected from those numbers. Dell’s website is a nightmare in comparison to Apple’s for ease of finding what you want.

But we have to admit that Apple has a greater variety of things on their website compared to Dell. There you only go for hardware and software to put in it mostly. Any thing perippheral to that is simply printers, camera, scanners, etc. At Apple, there’s Quicktime, a whold support structure for Macs and OS X, and a major software download section, Movie previews and iTunes and .mac.

Still, it’s good to be #1.

  2. Maybe all those people thinking about a Mac also go to the Dell site to price up a comparable machine. And then figure out that the eMac isn’t such a bad deal after all.

… and the buy the Dell anyway because they’re really stupid and think that they need a PC (with Intel integrated graphics) to play the latest games and to run Word.

  3. I remember years ago having a tremendous curiosity about Apple, so I would try and find out what I could, but could never quite take the plunge to buy. It took a trusted loved one to help me decide– and I have never looked back.

There is a significant curiosity out there– that’s clear. It seems feasible to me that somewhere down the road (soon, hopefully), we will reach a critical threshold of positive Apple news that will allow the great unwashed to take the plunge, too.

    Here’s to hopin’.

  4. Yeah, but keep in mind people are going to Apples website for lots of non-buying reasons.
Like visiting the Quicktime section and checking out the movie trailers previews. Apple has many exclusive previews there and one can view using a PeeCee.
Or to get the free music download.

People are just visiting the Dell site for information on product for sale – there are no movie previews or music tunes for sale.

  5. website visits hrm.. something consumers do and businesses don’t..

generally speaking, that is.. this just goes to show Apple is a consumer oriented company as opposed to Dell who sells the majority of their PCs to businesses

How easily we forget that Dell is the #1 PC manufacturer in the world, selling far more units world wide than Apple but also more than HP, Gateway, etc. They sell most of their product through their website (if it’s as hard to navigate as you say then I don’t know how).. They don’t sell very much through retail. Apple does.

Dell sells on it’s service. That is what gets customers coming back for more. They provide nothing besides their service and support than any other PC manufacturer. Dell sells Windows boxes. WIndows is somewhere around 92% of the worldwide marketshare in sales. It’s quite astonishing that Apple has more visitors. It can’t just be to their store section.
