Free MS Office replacement ‘NeoOffice for Java 1.1 beta’ (OpenOffice) released for Mac OS X

“Neolithic Office for Java (NeoOffice/J) is billed as a ‘reasonably stable’ version of the office suite that has been specifically engineered to run natively on Mac OS X. The open-source software is available under the GNU General Public License (GPL) and is available for free,’ MacNN reports.

“The software is a double-clickable Mac OS X application. It also features much tighter integration with Mac OS X, including full support for Mac OS X fonts, international input, etc. The NeoOffice/J team has released a new version 1.1 beta version, which, among other things, moves the menus to where they belong, in the Mac menu bar,” MacNN reports here.

  1. This version is much better than the previous 0.8a release I was using, but I’d still like to see the dialog boxes looking more OSX-like.

Well done on the progress so far though chaps.

  2. Yeah .. i dont want to be telling people about my Mac (hypothetically, I rarely talk about this stuff for no reason).. and then drop the bomb.. that I don’t have Office.. but an Office ripoff..

  3. Well…. if the low level buzz is correct …. we might see a MacOffice replacement for AppleWorks…

If this happens…. no one will have any reason to use anything from Redmond again !!

    Wouldnt that be nice ??

Oh, and a word to Apple Legal…..

Im not saying this is gonna happen….
    just speculating, you understand !! ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”rolleyes” style=”border:0;” />
