  1. I wonder why no one ever bothers to mention the fact that user-agent strings ae often spoofed. I use safari but almost always spoof the agent string to windows IE to get by some of the more annoyingly resrictive sites.

  2. What about humble Netscape. I must be the only one on the planet who still uses it.

And whats with the new fancy security at MDN, no matter how i fill in the ‘Please enter the word you see in the image below:’ box, it almost always says it dosn’t match. I’m on a Mac using Netscape. Is that the problem ?

  3. Huh? Eh.. no Safari has a virtual monopoly and thus MS’s IE crisis is averted…

You’re right, Firefox for the Mac is good.. but Safari kicks ass.

Okay, so I really have nothing to say other than.. Apple, the government of the Mac Country hath provided a browser paid for by your tax dollars (your mac).

Marketshare is meaningless considering Safari isn’t on Windows..

  4. Horse Pucky!

The Globe and Mail Technology section recently ran a poll asking which browser you used (I can’t give a link as it has been deleted).

    However, they asked about:
    IE
    Netscape
    Opera
    Mozilla
    Firefox
    Safari.

Anybody care to guess what the percentage for Safari was?

    Give up?

    11%

Of course, every Safari user is on a Mac, a Mac with OS X at that. Mac users could also vote for all of the other choices. So the REAL percentage of (typically Canadian, typically a little bit geeky) Mac users on the internet is closer to something like 12%, which accords with my experience in real life.

Admittedly not a scientific poll, but you are only allowed to vote once (per email address, at least), and I am unaware of any campaign to load up the Mac numbers.

Also, the OneStat outfit tends to measure sites that would attract a higher than average percentage of Windows users.

Finally, as Meros so correctly points out, Safari often identifies as something else. On the few occasions I have looked at how I identified (I have Safari set to automatic), it has said Mozilla.

I’ll see if the Globe can resurrect the link to the poll for us.

  5. Safari is the business. Along with Pithhelet (sorry MDN) and Safaricon it is perfection. Without spoofing one needs Firefox for some sites who believe the world only runs on IE. Now Windows users ought to be moving en masse to Firefox.

Any creeping slowness I had with Safari stopped after making the icon file in safari library read only.

  6. Ever seen Apple promote Safari????
Ever seen Apple promote anything….other than U2 iPod???

Apples advertising program is the worst.
They stuck all their marketing money into their stores.

  7. Ummm… how do you set what Safari is set to spoof to

In terminal type defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeDebugMenu 1
User Agents in the Debug Menu gives several options
To turn it off again type defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeDebugMenu 0

  8. safari is crap. they have sacrificed loading things correctly for loading them fast. the book mark manager is cool, but is not user friendly to use.

and camino is emulating safari now. ah well.

oh, and i use chimera. so there.

  9. 88.9% can’t load 10 or more sites at once, can’t use tabbed browsing, can’t block pop-ups without a helper program, can’t reset their history/cache with one click, and can’t get a grip on modern day life. They are riding high on the status quo “Duh” bandwagon.

Yikes!! What’s wrong with them including this in a preferences panel??

    “Ever seen Apple promote Safari????”

Yes, during the WWC I think is when it first came out, like a year and a half ago or so? They promoted it on the front page of their website and in press releases. That’s enough, Safari has seen a ton of Mac users switch to it. Apple just wanted to have an alternative to the now defunct MS IE.

Lets not forget that IE is the backdoor where *most* Windows viruses enter through. MS had the *brilliant* idea of combining their internet browser with their file browsers, inherently decreasing security, and now simply opening up a folder on many Windows systems will assault you with pop-up windows.

Basically MS doesn’t “get it” B Gates didn’t understand the internet phenominon when it started out, I don’t think MS understands it now. Nor do they understand security, music, video, or even the nature of creativity and innovation. They’re just a bunch of grown up schoolyard bullies who steal your lunch money.

  11. While we’re on the subject of Safari, I have a friend who is stuck in IE hell, are there any good programs or utilities that can help you do stuff like move your bookmarks over, and stuff like that? (she has a lot and doesn’t want to copy n paste each one separately).

  12. For my company’s website our Browser Usage in October 2003 was:
    87.11% IE
    8.82% Mozilla (inc. Netscape)
    4.07% Others

    By platform:
    Windows 91.9588%
    Mac 7.5630%
    Linux 0.4403%
    SunOS 0.0246%
    BSD 0.0133%

Fast forward to last month (October 2004):
    73.19% IE
20.52% Mozilla (inc. Netscape & Firefox)
    4.15% Safari
    2.14% Others

    By platform:
    92.6256% Windows
    7.1038% Mac
    0.2333% Linux
    0.0317% SunOS
    0.0056% BSD
    0.0001% Blackberry

That represents almost 8 million hits and 200,000 unique user sessions.

Just download firefox, start it up and you can get it to get all the bookmarks, etc. from IE over to Firefox.

  14. by my math apple have approximately 3% market penetration and safari has .89% browser penetration surmising that around 1/3 of apple users are using safari – the other 2/3 will be interestingly split between IE and Mozilla, I am sure.
