Boston Globe: Apple’s iMac G5 includes ‘the kind of thoughtfulness sadly absent in much of the PC wo

“Slim. Sleek. Streamlined. Stylish. Chic. Those aren’t adjectives normally associated with a desktop computer — unless it’s an Apple iMac,” John P. Mello Jr. reports for The Boston Globe. “The company that pushed the design envelope with its ‘Lamp Mac’ — which looked more like a prop from a remake of ‘War of the Worlds’ than a computer — is again showing its leading-edge lan with the iMac G5.”

Mello Jr. reports, “Set-up was a snap. In fact, Apple added a wrinkle that more PC makers should adopt. As you boot up for the first time, you’re asked if you already own a Mac. If you do, you’re given instructions for connecting the computers via their FireWire ports and automatically moving information from your old unit to your new one. That’s the kind of thoughtfulness sadly absent in much of the PC world.”

“In the past, one of the knocks against all-in-one computers was they lacked expandability. Today, that’s largely a bum rap, because USB and FireWire ports allow you to expand a computer’s repertoire without resorting to traditional expansion methods — all revolving around opening the box,” Mello Jr. reports. “That’s not to say there aren’t reasons for opening an iMac — adding memory, for instance, or popping in a wireless networking AirPort Extreme Card. For that, simply remove two Phillips screws at the base of the unit, lift its stand upward, and the back of the machine can be removed for convenient access.”

“When buying a PC, software is almost always an afterthought. Programs on new PCs are largely ‘lite’ versions of robust applications, or worse. That isn’t the case here,” Mello Jr. reports. “Sure, in the productivity department, AppleWorks isn’t any substitute for a full-featured suite like Microsoft Office, but the iLife package of entertainment applications packaged with the iMac G5 is outstanding.”

MacDailyNews Take: Apple products provide “the kind of thoughtfulness sadly absent in much of the PC world.” Pure truth, but very difficult to sell to the general “fixated-on-sticker-price” consumer, as Apple knows all too well. The more articles like this, the easier Mac sales will be for Apple.

  1. Hey Mello Yellow.. the reason that thoughtfulness is absent in the PC world is because those PC’s aren’t meant for you, they’re meant for BUSINESSES.

PC’s are meant for businesses with IT depts that are only too happy to spend another weekend trying to wrestle with the Network Connection Wizard.

    Macs are for PEOPLE.

    Rock on, Cupertino.

  2. The news is that the gospel is gaining traction beyond the already converted. For those of us who read articles of “Pray for Apple”, “beleaguered Apple” and so on in the second of the 1990s, this is indeed good news.
My 20 inch iMac is everything that the article says. Poor iMac G-4 goes to the front desk of our business. We’ll miss you!

  3. AppleWorks is definitely in need of an upgrade. We have been waiting for that a long time now. But, even as it sits, it is a remarkably good value for the suite of applications that it contains and still turns out good work.

  4. mike,

well said. i hate that network connection wizard – it’s useless. i speny nearly 2 hours trying to work out how to make an XP machine see my iBook’s hard drive. I tried absolutely everything in that crappy wizard trying to get the drive up, then worked out that you have to open up My Computer, then click ‘Tool/Map Network Drive’

WHAT? WHY DID THE WIZARD NOT TELL ME THIS? WHY IS IT JUST A BUTTON AMONGST MANY THAT ARE NOT RELATED IN ANY WAY AT ALL!!!?

you know, mike’s right – Macs ARE for people, people who are logical and have a straight thought process for things like network connections. What in the world must Microsoft be collectively smoking?

    Pass the Pipe.

  5. AppleWorks X

It’s like Microsoft Office for the other bit of your Life.

Come on Steve, get an Office Killer released, or at least hint you are planning to ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  7. I think Appleworks will be completely upgraded when the Tiger OS is unveiled. It’s gonna have some interesting features nobody has put into a word processor before. At this point Apple needs to make it so and they will in about 5 or 6 months.

huh? your argument is what exactly? I get that you’re trying to be witty..but.. what.. saying that Network Connection is tough on a Mac…?

    Pffft…”Plug in Ethernet Cable. Done.”

  9. mike,

No, Network Connection on a Mac is laughably easy. Network Connection to a PC is overly complicated for what should be a simple, straightforward process (a la OS X)

And there was no argument Mike, just me giving my opinion.

    “Pffft…”Plug in Ethernet Cable. Done.”

    I know, it’s easy. On a Mac.

  10. Are you asking for AppleWorks X because you are unhappy with M Office, or because you don’t like Microsoft?
If Steve (the other good looking one, not me) and friends have a vision for how to make a killer office suite, then go for it. If the motivation is just to beat Microsoft, then it’s a bad idea.
